BREVARD – Will the Brevard College offense please step forward?
The Tornados opened their NCAA Division II era Saturday night at Memorial Stadium with a 28-0 loss to UNC Pembroke. It’s the first shutout since 2006, when Brevard reinstated its football team.
The closest Brevard came to scoring was the UNCP 37-yard line, and that came late in the third quarter.
“For us, I’m not sure right now that we have an offensive identity. I thought our offense looked good in preseason, but you just don’t know until you play someone,” second-year Tornados coach Paul Hamilton said. “What I started to see, and didn’t want to see, was how it was either all (quarterback Kye Hamilton) or (running back John Taylor). We’re just not balanced right now.”
Taylor ran for 49 yards and caught four of Brevard’s six completions for 52 yards. The rest of the offense accounted for 13 yards.
Meanwhile, UNCP had scoring drives of 39, 39, 8 and 26 yards — three of which were helped along by Brevard turnovers, including a pair of interceptions off Hamilton throws.
UNCP struck first with a 1-yard run by Rashon Kennedy with 4:03 left in the first quarter. Kennedy added an 8-yard score midway through the second quarter, as the Braves took a 21-0 lead into the half.
“Physically, we got pushed around tonight on both sides of the ball. They controlled the line of scrimmage,” Paul Hamilton said. “Even when we stopped them, they moved the ball enough to change the field. We’ll go to work and learn from this.”
UNCP converted 4-of-7 third downs in the first half and held the ball seven minutes longer than Brevard. The Braves finished with 337 yards of offense, while the Tornados had just 172 — 3.3 yards per play.
“We struggled to get protection all night, whether it was Kye or Michael Gaines at quarterback. We’ll have to work on staying out of second and long,” Paul Hamilton said.
Notes
UNCP is fielding a football team for just the second year. Former Avery County standout Garrett Sutphen threw for 22 yards on 2-of-3 passes for the Braves.
