Elon Tracksters Finish Fourth at SoCon Championship

STATESBORO, GA. - With their highest finish ever in the history of the program, the Elon tracksters finished in fourth place at the 2009 Southern Conference Championship. Putting up 84 points, another program best, the Phoenix placed behind the winner Appalachian State, runner-up Western Carolina and Georgia Southern.
To add to the first days success, Elon closed out the final day with four additional all-conference performances and two new school records. Sophomores Justine Robertson and Emily Fournier each added their second all-conference performance as they each earned another second place finish.
Coming off a second place performance in the javelin throw on day one, Robertson put up another second place performance in the women's discus throw on day two to add to her all-conference collection. Her throw of 40.38 meters was just short of Appalachian State’s Lily Talent who had the winning toss of 40.87 meters.
Distance specialist Fournier closed out her all-conference accolades with a second place finish in the women's 5000 meter run. Her time of 18:07.62 was only 10 seconds off Samford’s Andrea Seccafiens winning time of 17:57.96.
Junior Andrea March earned another all-conference for the Phoenix as she finished in second place in the women's 400 meter hurdles. March crossed the finish line in 1:03.84, less than a half second off the winning time set by Tierra Johnson of Western Carolina.
Freshman sprinter Amy Salek came through for the Phoenix in a tough field in the women's 400 meter dash. Amy finished the race in third place and earned all-conference accolades with her time of 55.63.
School records were set in both relay events as the teams picked up key points for the team. 4x100 meter relay team consisting of Dana Cataldo, Sarah Skogen, Veronica Day and Salek crossed the finish line in 47.81 earning fourth place in that event and setting a new Elon standard. The 4x400 meter relay team comprised of Sarah Skogen, Melissa Turowski, Jennine Strange and Salek ran a program best time of 3:49.15, earning yet another fourth place finish for the team.
Other point scorers on day two came from Jacqueline Beliveau who placed eighth in the women’s 400 meter hurdles. Lauren Hawkesworth finished sixth in the long jump with a distances of 11.74 meters. Teammate Day closed out the competition in eighth place with a leap of 11.72 meters.
Robertson added to her point gathering as she placed sixth in the women's shot put with a best toss of 11.90 meters. Fellow thrower Alyssa Girvin placed sixth in the women's discus throw with a throw of 36.78 meters earning freshman all-conference honors.
Beliveau closed out the two-day heptathlon competition in seventh place with a score of 4126.
