We open Shar and play UNC. Nothing on this message board. How far has basketball dropped at Elon. New staff needed to bring back interest

True shame that we didn’t change coaching staff before this year. Really reducing the excitement of this program. Also, we have five senior starters and aren’t considered to be a Top 5 team in the CAA. If that’s not a sign of where this program is, not sure what is.
Also, this has nothing to do with the UNC game. The issue is how we’ll fare in CAA play and it’s not looking promising.

Wofford lost by 11. We lost by 50. Matheny needs to be fired NOW before he does any more damage. Book this: we will NOT finish better than the bottom 3 of the CAA. I didn’t expect to win this game. But I think Elon fans should expect to be competitive. At least within 30 points. We can forget this season. We’re toast. We need to put someone in place now to start recruiting. DAMNIT I’m pissed off about this!!!

Matheny will ruin Hannah and Poser. Remember this. It will happen unless Matheny leaves before the end of this season.

The atmosphere and building were awesome tonight, unfortunately Matheny was there too.
Really just an embarrassing night all around. What could have been a cool night for Elon was overshadowed by a national tv drubbing.
Reading Matheny's post game comments show why he needs to go. Anyone with an ounce of common sense knew it needed to happen at the end of last season.
Go Phoenix!

63 is the most first half points UNC has scored in 2 1/2 years. I’ve got to believe 116 is one of their top scoring efforts overall in the last 2 1/2 years as well.

The worst outcome for this season will be a middle of the pack finish in the CAA. I am hearing a lot of talk about how Matheney will get 2 years in the new building to see if he can recruit more effectively. If he can be successful it needs to show with a top 3 finish in the conference this year. If Elon needs to move on, lets have some clarity. I don't think Blank will pull the trigger unless he believes no one will criticize him for it. You have to admit that all of the coaches and players in the current program are good people and that still counts for something at Elon, but Elon can't afford to spend $30-40 million on a new building and have a noncompetitive MBB team.

At the end of any day it’s about the W’s and L’s. Also the sad and unfortunate truth is we are starting 5 seniors with subpar junior class following behind them and the freshman, though early, don’t seem to be too promising. If these are the rebuilding stages then there should be new leadership, that’s very logical and reasonable.

I think for us to be upset that we lost by a lot to a really good team is maybe not overly fair. But I understand that the frustration of this fan base is much more than that. I think am very interested to see how we do the next few weeks against opponents that are more of our caliber outside of the D2 teams we are playing. Games like Pacific, Boston, UNCG, Furman etc. Out of the remaining 9 non-conference games taking out Milligan and Central Penn - not knowing about a lot of these opponents I think we could go 5-4/ 6-3 maybe. Thoughts?

It's not about losing, it's about getting embarrassed. A 50 pt loss to any team should be unacceptable to the entire coaching staff, AD, fans, etc. Instead we praised them for the butt-whooping and act as if the night was some huge success.
Matheny is in his 10th year with a senior laden team and that's what we put on the court on a marquee night for Elon.
As it was pointed out earlier in the thread Wofford was toe-to-toe with UNC for most of their game before ultimately losing by 10. Do I think we're 50 pts worse than them every night? Probably not, but that's what this coaching staff delivered on the night everyone was watching.
Fielding competitive teams should be the main objective, not just being at the table.
On a side note, take a look at the conference standings for fall sports outside of football.
Men's soccer - 2-5-1 Women's soccer - 1-7-1 Volleyball - 4-12
None made the conference postseason. Women's soccer I'll give a pass, because the new coach hasn't even had a chance to recruit yet, but men's soccer has went from an NCAA tournament team to a shadow of itself.
Volleyball has a coach in her 16th year, no NCAA appearances, overall losing record and 17-64 in the CAA since joining.
If winning is the objective someone is doing something wrong.
Go Phoenix!

Preach EU99! Preach!!!
Volleyball has been terrible for the past four years. You can’t blame the facility for their struggles.
We have made commitments to these programs. We should EXPECT to be competing.
Your point about five senior starters is a great one. What I’m scared of is what we have behind them.

There doesn’t seem to be much behind them and that’s the sad unfortunate truth. Our bench brings zero to little depth, out sophomore class barely even sees the court, and our juniors are about the same. Anything is possible but finishing at the top, or even middle, of our conference will be HARD.

Volleyball has been awful for years, the coach should have been fired a few years ago. She played cupcakes the last few years in non-conference to offset the awful conference record. Women's soccer not much better... the coach left even though we won 6 conference games in four years...Have been not been good in 5-6 years. Men's soccer was the only good fall team we had for years and had a bad season.
Football is the only sport that the AD cares about enough to fire a coach.
