1. Media Exposure is circular. If you win you will have exposure, if you have pro talent you will have exposure. 2. Recruiting Base: That seems misguided - North Carolina is maybe the best basketball state in the US. 3. Admissions - W&M has multiple tourney appearances, so does Davidson, so does Wofford, etc. That's just an excuse for bad recruiting 4. Tradition: Again circular. Until Coach K arrived at Duke they had no tradition, he changed that school
5. Budget I give you that, but quite frankly why would you hand someone the keys to Porsche if all they can handle is a KIA. It's a mentality and Matt and his den of washed up ex-players (not coaches) doesnt have it.

I agree with all of the above points.
However, one thing. W&M has NEVER made the tournament. Just a note. I do think it is a fake crutch - academics.
In the end, we need to stop making excuses and expect more from our programs and leadership. Our coach make more than $300k. We’re not getting the return on our investment.

It should also be a red flag that Matt was an assistant for so long at Davidson. Any coach of quality would have been poached.

Matheny has made an entire career off of being an assistant fo Steph Curry. I wouldn’t say his being an assistant there for a while was a bad thing, it’s where he went to school and probably remained loyal.
Regardless, academics is a joke of an excuse, it’s his own standards, if he had a player he really wanted I’m sure the school would allow it. Worst recruiter in the country so this season isn’t a surprise.

I mean good for him to take something like being an assistant for Curry and turning it into a career/ money making experience. Not so good for Elon.

REALITY CHECK--- Fan base is not very strong. Academics standards are too high for a school that doesn't really have that high of an academic reputation throughout the country like the IVYs. Plus they previously didn't give exceptions. No tradition and small budget. Just a few years ago (<10) the team had HS level facilities, locker rooms and support staff. Many good players in NC but there are also too many colleges in the state.
Here is a basic concept. Most recruits get recruited by schools at similar level. Compare your whole picture vs the whole picture of your recruiting competition. Yes Elon has a shiny new toy(gym) but what else do they have? Honestly the gym is just catches them up to most of the other schools at the same level.
With all that said, the team could be a little better.

Looking at verbalcommits offer page..
We have signed the foreign kid, Goran Miladanovic. 6-11 I think he is playing in Florida but obviously a foreign kid.
While Poser has contributed some this season, I always project foreign kids (especially near 7 footers) to be projects.
He is a verbal commit.
Shykeim Phillips- PG...you would think we should be able to land a solid PG. Even if Swoope returns, minutes are up for grabs. NC kid, does have offers from ECU and ODU. But he probably is a backup for those guys.
Jamon Battle- SG from VA. Losing Santa Ana, he would be battling Wooten and Pack, so again....minutes are up for grabs. Has offers from JMU, Towson, Hofstra as well.
David Skogan- Big guy with offers from Texas Tech, Rutgers, lots of schools way higher on the recruiting landscape than Elon. I would say zero shot.
Joel Kabimba- I think Tanner spent some time up in VA, so many that is why we are getting in with some of these VA recruits. Kabimba has good size, nice looking stroke from deep. Pretty explosive, though not out this gym or else he would be getting higher offers. Right now shows offer from Radford. Might have a shot at this point if none of the big boys move in, surprised does not have more offers honestly. He could be a versatile PF/center to go along with Hannah and Poser.

So is it unrealistic for Elon to expect to be as good as Wofford or Furman in men's basketball? I don't see them having any advantages in terms of facilities or location or interest by students.

23-7 10 min into the game.... The only bright spot was in the last 10 min of the 1st half it was 19-10 Elon.
But getting down 15+ points in the first 10 min is hard to come back from.

In the early years in the SOCON, Elon was beating both Wofford and Furman regularly. Wofford has had a few good years lately but look at how long it took for that to happen. They stuck with their coach because he is a good coach and they knew he was working with inferior facilities and budget. Many of the historically good SOCON teams were not in the league when Wofford emerged. Furman has had a good season.

So we should stick with our current coach?

Depends on how the season ends.
Plus, it depends on what type of invesment Elon will put into the next coaching staff.
If we plan on using a lowball budget with no budget for assistants and recruiting then we might as well stay the course.
No coach will look at the hardest job by far in the CAA and jump at the chance of getting your head kicked in.

Elon got rid of Nestor, who had won the only D1 conference championship in school history. He was working with WAY LESS than Matheny. Worse budget, facilities and support in a tough Socon. I have a coaching friend that was in the CAA at the same time. He had direct knowledge that his schools summer recruiting budget was bigger than Elon's yearly recruiting budget.

Yeah, Elon is so far behind on basketball budget, the expectations are essentially zero in a conference like the CAA. I do think the new gym raises the expectations somewhat....but I think Elon understands that even with the new gym investment they are still very far from expecting championships. Matheny was 43-46 in SoCon play and was trending up until moved to a more difficult conference. Nestor was 39-61 in SoCon play. Nestor won 15 games at Elon once in 6 years. Matheny has won 15 or more 6 out of 9 seasons. Matheny is a much better coach than Nestor. They have won 2 out of the last three road games. Coming home for two tough but winnable games in Delaware and Drexel. Really need to get one of these next two. If Elon can stay in touch, the back end of our CAA schedule seems more favorable. I feel like the team has finally getting some confidence after losing Swoope. I only expect maybe...7-11 CAA record. They dug too deep of a hole to get close to .500. Not terrible but at least it won't be last place like predicted here: bustingbrackets.com/2018/09/21/caa-basketball-2018-19-preseason-power-rankings/2/
