Well, my predictions were wrong and I don't see things changing so let's discuss possible replacements.
I know most view Elon as one of the more challenging, less desirable jobs in the CAA.
I think our options are to hire a D3/D2 head coach that has success but isn't a known, hot commodity.
Or we can hire an assistant from the D1 level that isn't one of the more well known hot names in basketball.
For example, any Duke assistant or UNC assistant, or pretty much any top 10 program. \
One name that I will throw out is Bobby Lutz.
Yes, he is 60 years old but is known to coach teams that play hard defense and are usually well prepared and well coached teams.
I think due to Lutz connections in the state from coaching at Pfieffer, Charlotte, and NC State...he will be able to recruit talent to Elon.
Lutz is known for dipping into the JUCO pool of talent, so I think he would need assurance that Elon is willing to make exceptions at times to get players on campus but I think everyone here agrees that as long as they are good kids, exceptions are fine.
Lutz has been on record saying he wants to coach again. IMO, Elon would be crazy not to offer him the job if he was willing to come.
He is a big local name that would bring instant credibility to the Elon program like no other hire could.
He is on Charlotte's radio often, which made me think about him possible coming to Elon.
They aren't that many jobs available in the state of NC and I think he is anxious enough to take a job outside of the state just because he wants to give it "one more go".
At 60, he could coach at Elon for a decade and we would not have to worry about him leap frogging to another job. I think at his age, even if Elon went to back to back NCAA tournaments under Lutz, no big names are going to come calling.
It would be the rare chance to get a coach with experience, credibility, and enough left in the tank to get the job done.
I think at the very least, he gets us in the top half of the conference consistently due to his coaching and if the chips fall right with talent on given year, we would contend under Lutz.
What are some other names you guys like?
Do you want to go the less risky, proven head coach route or hire a young, less known assistant with big upside but better chance it is a flop like Matheny has been in the CAA?
