I guess we passed on Schrange...I have to think at his age and station he would have taken the job. I thought maybe Elon was waiting on Kentucky to finish its season to bring in Justus for an interview...I can't see Cal letting him tramp off to Elon for an interview right in the middle of the tournament. And I still think that's a possibility. We need to hire a coach this week.
And for the record, I find it strange that with all the solid jobs available, it appears Wes Miller didn't even get a look. Not St Joes, not George Washington, not Tulane. Not even Buffalo. Seems strange to me.

Seems strange to me. Agree... I feel like there have been some hires that come off one good run in the NCAA's. Whereas Miller has had three successful seasons in a row. I will say the longer he stays and UNCG makes me think maybe he might be trying to really build a long term program.

Did we pass on Schrange or did he pass on us? I find it hard to believe that there would not have been enough done by way of phone interviews that when Schrange was on campus an offer was a mere formality. Did he not like what he heard?

Who is surprised the search is so quiet?

Not surprised. From what I’m told, we did not hire a search firm. They usually lead to leaks. We also must not be going after a hot name since agents like to leak stuff.
I’m keeping the faith. For now.

Per Hoop Dirt this morning: I have heard that Ohio State assistant coach Mike Schrage interviewed at Elon yesterday. I have heard from a great source that this one is down to 4 candidates, and will most likely be wrapped up by the end of the week.

Yep..it looks like Schrage was back on campus. My friend who saw him last week in Schar was 1000% sure it was him; so maybe he came down on his own dime to check out the new arena? Yesterday might have even been a second interview. Based on his pedigree..I would think he is the front-runner. But maybe not...

Mike Schrage's Ohio State bio claims "20 years of coaching experience", which must include his time as an administrative assistant, academic and recruiting coordinator, and DOBO. Hands on coaching by people holding these positions violates NCAA rules.

Elon looking to rehire Matheny?

Elon looking to rehire Matheny? You bring up a very interesting point. The age old (and personal favorite) saying “you never know what you’ve got till it’s gone” sure comes to mind. As most of you all on this board have a high level of basketball expertise, especially college hoops, if Elon does choose to hire back Coach Matt, history will be on their side. Take the classic example of Indiana State briefly parting ways with the great John Wooden after the 1946 season over a disagreement with school administrators (something over new belts for the teams’ shorts lore has it). As the legend goes, the would be Wizard of Westwood was rehireed after just a month and went on to a 27-7 record and a runner up spot in the NAIA national championship. Let’s look to history folks, if we do, I wouldn’t be shocked if we see some similar results.

Another name I’ve heard floating around is Tim Sweeney. Elon faithful may remember him as a trusted assistant and consigliere on Matheny’s early staffs at Elon. As a D3 (I believe) head job called his name, he had to leave the Phoenix some years ago. With some valuable HC experience under his belt, it may be the right time for Timmy to come back and take over this ball club. I believe he’s got what it takes, he did mold Stephon Curry into quite the player after all. Just sayin lol.

Elon looking to rehire Matheny? Certainly not right now. Coaches, above all else, are hired to win. If you look at everything other than winning, Matt was awesome. Matt had some success, but could never build on it. This was never better illustrated than by the 2012-13/2013-14 seasons and the 2016-17/2017-18 seasons. Everything was stacked in Elon's favor in 13-14 and 17-18 but we imploded. I'm not sure why, but the results speak for themselves. The next coach may have the same or different problems. We may wish in coming years that we had some of Matt's positive characteristics back. But I'm hoping that perennial conference cellar dweller is a characteristic we'll be able to shed in due time.
