Vince Walden from Arkansas State added to the coaching staff: Struggling to comprehend this staff. We brought in a former elite prep / high school coach here. Not sure how he's going to translate for this level conference. All I see is a man with strong connections. Where are the X & O's that the old staff were masterminds of? This staff seems more about recruiting "their way" and less about the development of young intellectuals. We're going to miss Matt more than we know it. He was one of the best basketball minds in the country.

I liked Matheny and he certainly had a good basketball mind, but calling our previous staff "masterminds" is a pretty big exaggeration, isn't it? I'm sure Schrage, Walden, and the rest of our new assistants understand the Xs and Os just fine, and I already feel better about our recruiting after just one commit.
"It ain't about the Xs and Os it's about the Jimmies and Joes" as they say. I think we'll do just fine in both areas.
Welcome coach Walden!

Worth noting that we're nowhere near done hiring coaches...and getting the recruiting guys in first makes sense strategically since we need to hit the ground running in that area. Basketball strategy can come a little later.

I have nothing negative to say about them. Coach Schrage is doing an excellent job, imo, so far in recruiting and in assembling his team. Holmes is an incredibly well respected assistant coach who has the Xs and Os chops and did a good job recruiting for a similarly positioned CAA school. He is likely to be a head coach someday - and frankly if Schrage's tenure at Elon lives up to expectations, I could see Holmes succeeding him. Lewis is a young guy with his own playing chops and deep connections across the region. Being the son of an influential figure/coach on the AAU circuit in the region is an added bonus. I don't know much about Walden beyond his resume, but being the coach of a prep powerhouse like IMG is a huge positive, not a negative. Recruiting is job 1, 2, and 3 at this level. Then comes development and Xs and Os.

Matt may be one of the best basketball minds in the country, but there are two things he is not: 1. An effective recruiter. and 2. An effective head coach at the D1 level. He'll make someone an great assistant in the P5 someday. He's got a lot to learn before he takes another stab at D1 head coaching.

Well that didn't last long. I just read a rumor that Walden was leaving for Texas A&M and then saw he'd already changed his Twitter bio. No official announcement yet that I can find, though.

Too bad we lost him, but it's a good sign that Schrage's hiring top knotch talent for the coaching staff.
