352 out of 363 on NCAA Net Rankings. One of three teams without a D1 win. Can we reach the promised land of #363??
*Side note - two other CAA teams, Hampton and Monmouth, are ranked below us. CAA has become a terrible basketball conference other than Charleston*

As you pointed out I’m not even sure we’re the worst in the CAA. Think we’re looking at 2 to 3 season down the line before we are competitive again unless we really steal some gems out of the portal.

Yeah, and Charleston will be gone soon. Probably A-10 or maybe even the American (they have said they will now consider non-football schools if its the right fit). And W&M I’m sure would like to follow UR to the A10 (while staying in the CAA for football). Why that has not happened yet is kinda surprising to me. Bottom line: the CAA is getting pretty dumpy. Elon should be proactive and start looking to get out, but really, who would want us?

At least those teams have a D1 win! Worried we might lose McKinnon to the portal. He is only player on our team with legitimate ability.

Mens and Womens basketball are a combined 0-15 in CAA play. The programs have combined to win 6 games total (4 against D1 all from the women) and have gone something like 42 days without a W and 56 days without beating a D1 opponent. Elon’s won one game away from Schar center all season (WBB @ NCCU).

Would 0 D1 wins get Blank and/or Taylor fired? Guessing no, but one can hope.

I don't think you can assess Taylor on this one year. No doubt it's historically bad, but even best case he maybe wins 5 or 6 D1 games with this team and still finishes bottom 2 or 3 in the league. That's not saying I think he's going to do a great job either. I just don't think this season tells us much about what he's capable of.
Coach Smith gets the benefit of the doubt with her past success, but she really has struggled to recreate what she had 5 or 6 years ago. This far into her tenure she shouldn't be in the spot she's in now though. We at least know she's capable of turning it around and does seem to have a few pieces to build around.
It is amazing to think how the Schar Center was supposed to be the game changer for our basketball programs and here we are at rock bottom.
Go Phoenix!

Agree with regards to Taylor, hard to judge him on this season. Jan/Feb was always going to be the telling months for him and I think he is doing a good job with what this team has. I really think we’re on the cusp of winning a few games in February with the schedule shaping out like it is. The womens team, while winless, will be fine. They are a few possessions away from being an average CAA team and they can still compete with most anyone left on the schedule. They’re loaded in the backcourt for the next few years and could be really good again soon. The turnovers and defensive lapses have at times been frustrating but they are playing a deep bench with a mix of a lot of young players.

Schrage leaving when he did sucked. Mass exit to the portal. I had a feeling they would be bad but not 2-18 (0-7 CAA) bad. They won't get rid of Taylor but it may be time to search for a new AD. Maybe the football and soccer team's success enables him to hang on another year but IMO it's time for a fresh face. Will the President book us a new hire?

Sorry..Taylor is Ernie Nestor 2.0. We had to grab him off the scrap heap because of the lousy timing of Skraggs leaving. He is doing a moderately good job with this team, but please, he is not the long term answer. Maybe he gets frustrated and quits, and then we can conduct a proper search for an HC. If not, we are stuck with Taylor for probably another 2 years

Nestor 2.0. Too funny but sadly true.
This team is 0-18, not 2-18. Anything less than D1 doesn't count.

Moderately good job is generous.
I get he didn't come in to a great situation, but a fair amount of that is on him. Remember how long it took for him to get his staff together after he was announced? I'm sure recruiting and transfer opportunities were severely diminished as a result. Taylor knew the timing and situation, and there seemed to be a real lack of urgency.

Having the staff together and having it announced publicly are two different things. I don't know the details, so it may have taken a while to get guys on staff, but I also know how Elon works when it comes to being allowed to announce hirings. That process can take some time because they won't let it be announced until the entire process (background check, all paperwork, etc.) is complete.

There we’re not a lot of bright spots. We’ve looked better in recent weeks but the opponents are better and it’s not helping our record. We get some of the weaker CAA teams coming up in February so how the team responds and plays the next month or so will tell me if I should be totally down on Taylor or still open to what he could bring to the table. Nothing that the team does short of a 180 and winning a bunch of games will convince me this was a good, or even decent season, but the ceiling for this team was never that high. As far as Taylor not being the long term answer. That’s sadly probably true. But maybe he gets Elon in a decent place and bounces after a few years to retire or go do something else and we get a proper HC search, probably after Blank has left too.
