Anyone know anything about the additions to the socon. im still hoping for UNCC if they get football or Coastal. Either way an additional basketball team would be great.

From what I understand, Samford just got in to the SoCon. I think they have a year before they join.
As far as other schools, I'd like to see Coastal Carolina in the SoCon. I could think of one to move out too. I dont think the powers that be for whatever reason want Coastal in, and I think thats unfortunate.

There are a couple of ways to think about this issue. On one side, I would prefer to have another academically oriented private school so that the competition is more on a "STUDENT athlete" level. On the other hand I would certainly like to see the overall strength of the conference increase, so a school like Coastal, with strong baseball and football, also appeals. Frankly, I think I would fall off the fence on the side of a stronger overall conference.

I like the addition of Samford. After that I think the Atlantic Sun would be another good conference to consider. With the addition of Florida Gulf Coast and USC Upstate I think some schools will be looking to get out. Although none play football I think Kennesaw would be a good public addition and I would love to see ETSU back in the conference. You also have Belmont, Mercer and Lipscomb as privates that expand the footprint. I have no problem with Coastal either. I would be happy with any of these schools.
Go Phoenix!

The privates don't want anymore inferior public academics (which is all publics from what I gather) and some of the publics (and some privates) do not want anymore non-football schools. Doesn't leave many choices.

I wonder if Stony Brook's addition to Big South will affect Coastal's desire to leave...thoughts?

There is no doubt in my mind that Coastal wants into the SoCon - but they cant get it if we dont let them. If they leave the Big South, where would they go?

STONY BROOK??! IN THE BIG SOUTH!?! They go from the NEC to the Big South? How does this help SB? Their travel expenses just tripled! Let's not forget the fact that they are not in the south. This is a really puzzling one to me in all honesty.

Is Stony Brook def going to the Big South? That would be the first I had heard of that. Is it just a rumor at this point? I agree, it doesnt fit the Big South footprint at all.

Well, it was reported in the WS Journal:
"The Big South Conference added Stony Brook as a football-only member yesterday, giving the league seven schools - enough for an eventual automatic bid to the NCAA Division 1 Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. Stony Brook will play next season as an independent and join the Big South in 2008, the same year that Presbyterian will enter in all sports as it moves from Division II......"
the article continued but you get the general gist.

Yeah, I missed the whole "football only" part of it in the Big South release. It makes since because they are now offering scholarships at SB and they need a place to play. They aren't ready for the A-10...and I don't think there is any room for them. Though, in the future, they could have held out and been a part of the new CAA football conference. Though, I'm not sure if they would have been up to their standards either.
