So on the CBS montage before the tournament every year, which Stephen Curry moment will be shown alongside Laettner's turnaround jumper to beat Kentucky, Bryce Drew's 3 to beat Missouri, Keith Smart's baseline jumper to win the championship for IU over Syracuse, etc.? Don't forget Valvano running around like crazy... To give my two cents, Davidson's run is pretty big, but I think App's win over Michigan is bigger. Oh, I agree App's win is big, but you have to look at the series that came from Davidson. They came out of a conference that was ranked 21st, and took on 3 teams that no one can argue were top 25-35 teams. Davidson beat Gonzaga, Georgetown and Wisc, all 3 are GOLIATHS in D-I b-ball. Michigan has historically been a major player in football, but there is no way there were a top 5 team. The App win should be viewed as the, "every dog has his day, and they won against a VERY overrated team." Yes the win is big because Mich was ranked #5 at the time. Big whoop. It showed that preseason polls are more meaningless than ever. App did it once. Davidson did it 3 times, in consecutive games, and against teams that NO ONE can argue against. Two of those teams were PROVEN and well tested! My opinion; App has gotten WAY to much mileage and recognition from the Michigan win. The CWS appearances by El Cid and GSU should be viewed as bigger accomplishments.

I guess opinions on this will boil down to football fans vs basketball fans. I like both sports, but lean more towards football. I think the App win over MI was big and unexpected, but one would think a two-time national champ (at the time) would not be a cakewalk, even from the lowly FCS division...it would have been a bigger win, IMO, if App had not just won back to back championships. Davidson played UNC, Duke and UCLA tough in Nov/Dec...nobody should have been too surprised that they could play on the same court - to me, beating Georgetown and Wisconsin were huge wins...not flukes (as some have argued the ASU football win was...not that I totally agree)...and to play Kansas to the wire, I think one would have to argue that marked an incredibly talented and well-coached team. Just wish their seniors were going to get another shot at UNC!

I hope none of the App posters read this because I'm sure I'll catch a ration of grief but for some of us the reason the App win is bigger is due to the level of expectation. Like it or not the SoCon, although D1, is still a level below the BCS level. While the SoCon is "mid Major" there is still no class distinction & Davidson, this year, was head and shoulders above any other SoCon team. So, it didn't seem so far out of the realm of possibility for Davidson to make their run in the playoffs as it did for App to beat a "storied" BCS football team.
So, on the one hand, Davidson may be a better overall basketball team than App is a football team. On the other, I certainly could see the possibility of Davidson to going deep into the playoffs where I would have in no way have expected App to have beaten a team like Michigan. Therefore, to me, the App win is bigger news than the Davidson run.

I acutally like to play devil's advocate and think both were extremly important for the conference. ;D
I do though, agree with an earlier post that it was a pretty bonehead comment by the commish.

These may be the biggest in RECENT years (in no particular order): 1. Davidson's Run 2. App win @ Michigan 3. GSU appearances in the CWS 4. El Cid's appearaacnes in the CWS 5. Elon's win over Clemson breaking the SoCon's 37 game losing streak versus ACC schools 6. Wofford's win over Purdue in men's basketball; 2007-2008 season 7. App's 3 straight national titles 8. Any win over a I-A/FBS team (none come to mind other than App's win, though I think Furman beat Wyoming 4 years ago) 9. GSU's 6 national titles, though I think only 2 have come as a SoCon member 10. The past 3 seasons (including this one) the SoCon has been a top 10 conference in the baseball RPI 11.I would also note that App's win over Arkansas in men's basketball this season was pretty significant. That's what I can think of off the top of my head. My SoCon knowledge is fairly limited. CofC has a few memorable moments as a member of the SoCon . CofC beat UNC when they were ranked 3rd in the Nation in 99, they also swept the SoCon regular season and tourney before losing as a 9 seed. CofC also beat UNC in 02 when they were crap and won the GAS by beating Wyoming, OSU, and Nova in 03.
