CollegeSportsReport.com Names Nkang Player of the Year

WEST CHICAGO, Ill. – Elon University senior linebacker Chad Nkang (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern High) has been tabbed the 2006 CollegeSportsReport.com FCS National Defensive Player of the Year. Along the way, he was also selected to the CollegeSportsReport.com First Team All-FCS for the second consecutive season.
Turning in a solid performance at the 2007 NFL Scouting Combine earlier this week at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis, Ind., Nkang finished among the top 10 performers of the 34 invited linebackers in the 40-yard dash, the vertical jump, the broad jump and the 60-yard shuttle run.
The Kai Team MVP at the 2007 Hula Bowl All-Star Classic, Nkang paced the SoCon and tied for fourth in the nation with 11.6 total tackles per game in 2006. The two-time Buck Buchanan Award finalist led the league and ranked among the country’s top four FCS players in tackles per contest throughout the past three years, finishing first in 2005.
As a freshman at Elon in 2003, Nkang played all 12 games as a fullback. He collected 307 yards on 68 carries for 4.5 yards per carry and one touchdown. The following three seasons, he started all 33 contests as an inside/middle linebacker. Nkang amassed 414 total tackles, 54 TFL, nine sacks, two interceptions, three PBU, seven forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and one touchdown during the past three years.
During his career, the NFL hopeful was named to five All-America first teams and three All-America second teams. He was tabbed to the Football Gazette All-Region first team twice and the second team once as well as the All-Southern Conference first team three times by the league’s media and twice by the league’s coaches and the second team once by the coaches.
Nkang was declared the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year twice by the media and once by the SoCon coaches. He was crowned the Football Gazette Regional Linebacker of the Year twice as well as the 2005 Football Gazette National Linebacker of the Year.
The Sports Network honored Nkang as its National Defensive Player of the Week once while the Football Gazette recognized him as its National Defensive Player of the Week three times. He was dubbed the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week four times, the Southern Conference Freshman of the Week once and the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Month seven times.
