35 Student-Athletes Placed on Academic All-Conference Team

ELON, N.C. – Elon University placed 35 student-athletes, the second highest total of a league-member institution, on the 2008 fall Academic All-Conference team. A total of 291 student-athletes, representing all 12 Southern Conference institutions, were named to the team. Six student-athletes, including Elon volleyball player and business administration major Sarah Schermerhorn, boasted perfect 4.0 grade point averages.
The 291 student-athletes, which participated in football, men’s and women’s cross country, volleyball and men’s and women’s soccer, averaged a 3.55 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
The women’s soccer team led the way, placing nine student-athletes on the team. Taylor Harlan, Amanda Jones, Lauren Griffith, Molly Calpin, Alix Heinicke, Brittany Halbergm Katie Persichini, Kyle Waggoner and Alanna Winsper each represented women’s soccer.
The volleyball team, the women’s cross country team and the men’s soccer team had seven Academic All-Conference team members selected. Schermerhorn, Mandy Wilson, Lizzie West, Stefanie Meyers, Shelley MacBean, Emily Regan and Kelly Blakewood represented the volleyball team. For cross country, it was Colleen McCarthy, Catherine Rossi, Lauren Fredrickson, Katie White, Jessica Doan, Meaghan Collins and Emily Fournier that earned Academic All-Conference honors. Steven Kinney, Ben Lunka, Will Mason, Kyle Boemer, Stephen Miller, Drew Gardner and Clint Collins were the men’s soccer team representatives.
The men’s cross country team and the men’s soccer teams had six student-athletes each earn Academic All-Conference honors. Representing the men’s cross country team are Eric Lewandowski, Andrew Hawkey, David Wells, Andrew Garrison, Matt Richardson and Justin Gianni.
Khirey Walker was the lone Phoenix football player selected to the Academic All- Conference team.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must possess at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the fall season and must have competed in at least one-half of their team’s competitions during the recently-concluded fall campaign.
This is the seventh year that the Southern Conference has named an Academic All-Conference Team by season.
The league’s women’s soccer teams placed 71 student-athletes on the team with football adding 54. Wofford led all schools with 44 honorees, followed by Elon with 35, The Citadel with 26 and Furman and Samford with 25 each.
