Cotton, Girvin Win Titles at SoCon Championships
Phoenix Finishes Third, Elliston Named Coach of the Year

BOONE, N.C. – The Elon track and field team earned a program-best third-place finish at the 2010 Southern Conference Championships in Boone, N.C. The Phoenix added two more conference champions on the second day of competition as Urysla Cotton took home the title in the shot put and Alyssa Girvin earned the crown in the discus. Seven Phoenix tracksters took home All-Southern Conference honors. In addition to the seven individual honors, the 4x400-meter relay team also took home an all-conference nod. In addition head coach Mark Elliston was honored as the Southern Conference Women’s Track and Field Coach of the Year.
Western Carolina took home the SoCon Championship with 221.5 points. Appalachian State posted 144 points for second place. Elon followed the Mountaineers with a third-best 123.5 points. It was the most points that Elon has ever earned at the SoCon Championship meet. Samford, Georgia Southern, College of Charleston, Chattanooga, The Citadel, Furman, Davidson, UNC Greensboro and Wofford rounded out the field.
The two titles of day two brought Elon’s total to four. The Phoenix also had 12 all-conference performances and two newcomers make the all-freshman team.
Cotton’s first-place and all-conference throw of 43-11.25 bested the second-place toss by over three inches. Justine Robertson finished fifth in the event with a mark of 41-10.75.
Girvin earned her title after beating the field by over a foot with an all-conference toss of 145-02. Robertson also earned all-league honors in the discus with a third-place throw of 137-06.
Veronica Day earned her second all-conference nod of the weekend in the triple jump. She leapt to a third-place finish with a mark of 39-08.75.
Caitlin Beeler and Emily Fournier picked up their second all-conference nod with second- and third-place finishes in the 5,000-meter run. Beeler crossed the finish line in 18:03.63, while Fournier posted a time of 18:04.01.
Jennine Strange crossed the finish line of the 800-meter run in second place with an all-conference time of 2:13.06.
The 4x400-meter relay team, made up of Melissa Turowski, Lauren Wilmer, Strange and Salek crossed the finish line in third place after clocking a 3:52.61, good enough for All-Southern Conference accolades.
Amy Salek notched a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.32 seconds.
Andrea March recorded with a seventh-place time of 1:06.13 in the 400-meter hurdles.
The 4x100-meter relay team, made up of Day, Sarah Skogen, Dana Cataldo, and Brittany Wilkins finished fourth with a school-record time of 47.69 seconds.
Elon will be back in action on May 2 at the Duke Twilight in Durham, N.C.
