ELON — Scott Riddle capped his record-breaking Elon University career by landing the school’s highest honor for athletes.
The star quarterback was joined by track and field standout Veronica Day as Basnight Outstanding Athlete award winners, recognizing Elon’s Male and Female Athlete of the Year, on Monday night at the school’s 37th annual athletics awards banquet.
Riddle, a product of Eastern Randolph High School, became the Southern Conference’s all-time leading passer as a four-year starter on the football team. He ended last season with 3,231 passing yards to lead the league for a record fourth time.
Riddle compiled separate stretches of 21 and 22 straight games with touchdown passes during his time at Elon. He finished his career as the holder of 41 combined school, league and NCAA milestones.
Day, a three-time Southern Conference champion, earned the league’s Field Performer of the Year this outdoor season as a senior.
Day won the league title in the triple jump and placed second in the long jump, both of which generated school-record distances. She also was a member of 400-meter relay that produced a school record.
Men’s basketball point guard Chris Long and softball second baseman Jackie Gonzalez were chosen for the Browne Memorial Sportsmanship awards.
Long, a senior, led the Southern Conference with 6.0 assists per game and paced Elon with 14.7 points per game. His 528 assists last season registered as the second-most in school history. He ranks in Elon’s all-time top five for career 3-pointers, assists and steals.
Gonzalez, a senior, will close her career as one of the Phoenix’s most prolific hitters. She stands third in school history with 202 all-time hits while her career batting average of .343 is tied for fifth-best in program history.
Men’s soccer midfielder James Carroll and women’s golfer Virginia Mayer were the recipients of the A.L. Hook Scholar-Athlete awards.
Carroll, a junior, is a computer science major with a 3.97 grade point average. Mayer, a junior, maintains a perfect 4.0 grade point average as an accounting major.
