I, just like everyone else, wish we could have gone further in the tournament and season. I'm sure Coach Matheny, each of the asst. coaches and each of the players, especially the seniors, are at least a little disappointed today. However, I'd like to thank Coach Matheny, each of the assistant coaches and each of the players for the most exciting Elon season I have ever witnessed. I am so proud of what the team and the coaching staff accomplished. Our program is obviously on the rise, and with Matt's leadership, I expect the program will continue to thrive. The biggest bummer is that I won't be able to see another Elon basketball game until next fall! Congratulations to the players and coaching staff on an extra fine season!

It was a good season:
Maui Champs North Division Champs 20+ wins Coach of the Year
I don't think any of us thought the year was going to be this nice. Congrats is in order for the team, who outplayed expectations!

Great season overall. We are primed for a run at the title next year. I'm wondering if playing Bonney more last night may have helped. Jack was obviously sick. CoC did a great job taking away our outside game.
If we have a weakness it is our lack of ability to create our own shots off the dribble. We have to get more athletic.
Great job, though. We should expect greatness next year.

Coach Matheny put it best last night, "The future is bright, we've got great guys on our team and it is a program." Congrats to a terrific season - truly enjoyed watching these guys battle night in and night out...next year we don't leave Asheville without some hardware!

Agreed. Very proud of the team and coaches - yeah, they came up a little short yesterday, but that just happens at times. They were beaten by a very good team - it was not for lack of effort that we lost. Excited about next year - just wish the rising seniors could stay around for at least another year. If I really believed in "karma", I would say the stars were definitely not lined up for Elon yesterday - honestly, losses in 5 sports on the same day??

21-11 could make the NIT couldn't it? Would love to see this team get a game or two in a post season tourney.

If we play in a post season tournament, it most likely would be the CBI or CIT. The CBI is considered a better tourney but the CIT would be good experience for the guys. Here is one sites take on Elon in the CIT.
Southern – Elon Phoenix There are three teams in the SoCon that all have 20+ wins, and the rest of this league flat out stinks. Winning the North Division of the SoCon should be good enough to get the Phoenix the nod into the CIT this season. We have Charleston featured in the CBI, though these two teams are clearly interchangable.
NOTE: This was written on March 7. Would love to see this team play again in Alumni if possible.

More tourney information if Elon gets invited and decides to go (CBI or CIT). I think we are worthy.....may come down to money.
Teams not qualifying for the NCAA tournament have the opportunity to be invited to one of three other postseason tournaments:
National Invitation Tournament - NIT College Basketball Invitational - CBI CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament - CIT
The NIT features a 32-team field chosen right after the NCAA chooses the 68 teams in its tournament. It awards automatic bids to regular season conference champions who do not otherwise go to the NCAA tournament.
The CBI features 16 teams and the CIT will have 32 teams exclusively from non-BCS leagues. The tournament champion from the Great West Conference is granted an automatic berth to the CIT. The CIT requires teams to have a .500 record or better while the NIT and CBI do not have such a requirement. The CIT also doesn't place teams in a bracket, opting to place teams in matchups after the previous round has concluded.
Schools have been known to decline an invitation to the CBI and CIT tournaments due to the lack of interest in playing in a third-tier tournament or to the pay-to-play nature of these tournaments.
To get a feel for what kind of teams the NIT, CBI and CIT invite to their tournaments, these were the 2012 participants along with their record and RPI.
The 2012 NIT, CBI and CIT teams:
NIT: Marshall (21-13, 43), Oral Roberts (27-6, 51), UCF (22-10, 54), Akron (22-11, 55), Middle Tennessee (25-6, 56), Miami, FL (19-12, 60), Mississippi (20-13, 61), Oregon (22-9, 63), Northwestern (18-13, 65), Drexel (27-6, 66), Nevada (26-6, 67), Seton Hall (20-12, 68), St. Joseph's (20-13, 69), Washington (21-10, 71), Northern Iowa (19-13, 73), Mississippi State (21-11, 75), Arizona (23-11, 76), Massachusetts (22-11, 77), Dayton (20-12, 81), LSU (18-14, 84), Cleveland State (22-10, 85), La Salle (21-12, 86), Tennessee (18-14, 87), Bucknell (24-9, 89), Minnesota (19-14, 90), Valparaiso (22-11, 95), Stanford (21-11, 97), Illinois State (20-13, 100), Texas-Arlington (24-8, 110), Iowa (17-16, 130), Stony Brook (22-9, 152), Savannah State (21-11, 191)

Anyone know the cost to play in either the CBI or CIT? Besides the fact that I would love to see the team play again this year - I think it makes senses to participate in any postseason tournament that we are invited to, simply for the experience factor. Any quality games we can play will only help our team next season.

Anyone know the cost to play in either the CBI or CIT? I absolutely don't know the price of playing in these tournaments. Research indicates that years ago hosting a CBI game cost $35-50,000; hosting a CIT game was about $17,000. The road teams pay their own travel expenses. So playing in these tournaments is a guaranteed financial drain. CBI is sponsored by a group of agents, many of whom have coach-clients who have incentive clauses paying the coach a bonus for playing in the postseason. The field will be filled by 17-15 and 16-16 teams whose coaches have these incentives. I sure hope we get a bid. This will provide additional days of practice, and a new experience for the team, coaches, and the program. Perhaps CIT, playing a relatively close opponent. Big South has a couple of candidates, including High Point.

Elon's going to the CIT. This will be great post-season experience. VCU played in one of these in 2010, won it, then was in the Final Four the next season. Not saying the same could happen to Elon (we can dream) but these are great for a program like Elon. Looking forward to it. Wish I was close enough to attend... www.elonphoenix.com/news/2013/3/15/MBB_0315133418.aspx

Elon Mens BB is playing in the CIT....per the TN this morning (article below):
The Elon University men’s basketball team will play in the postseason, after accepting an invitation to play in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
It will be Elon’s first postseason appearance in 14 years on the Division I level. The Phoenix competed in Division II the last time (1997) it played beyond its conference tournament.
“We’re thrilled and excited to have earned a postseason opportunity,†Elon coach Matt Matheny said.
The CIT consists of 32 teams and is in its fifth year. First-round games will be held Tuesday and Wednesday. Elon’s first-round opponent has yet to be determined.
Elon’s 21-11 record, the school’s highest victory total since 1974, and Southern Conference North Division title figured to bode favorably in the postseason selection process.
It seemed, as Matheny told the Times-News earlier this week, that the Phoenix wouldn’t learn its postseason fate until Sunday night, after the NCAA Tournament selected its 68 teams and the subsequent trickle down as the lower-tiered tournaments filled their brackets.
The Phoenix returned to full practices Thursday and was holding out hope to receive a bid from either the College Basketball Invitational or the CIT, or perhaps even the National Invitation Tournament, though that seemed unlikely.
“We’re ready to go,†Matheny said. “Our guys are really excited. They’re fired up.â€
Elon was eliminated from the Southern Conference Tournament by College of Charleston last weekend, a stingingly disappointing defeat at the time, given the special season it had built and the NCAA Tournament aspirations that were brewing.
