Who do you think are the "gems" in the 2013 class and why? Here are my "Gems" from 2013 based only on what they did in High school. I haven't taken into account if they have made the depth chart at Elon. This is also based on starter possibility by Jr yr or earlier. *Dominic Bourne, DL, 6-2, 270, Tampa Catholic HS, Tampa, Fla. - instincts, high motor, should make rotation, incredible burst, will get stronger *Dakota DeYent, OL, 6-3, 290, Lincoln HS, Tallahassee, Fla.- Fires off the ball low and pancakes when he blocks. Has agility to pull, road grader as a run blocker. Pass blocking technique is sound. *Nick Haskin, DB, 5-11, 184, Cardinal Gibbons HS, Cary, NC- Hitter, runner goes back when he tackles, takes correct angles to the ball, diagnoses play while in motion toward ball *Asunji Maddox Jr., DB, 5-11, 184, Goldsboro HS, Goldsboro, NC- Big Hitter, brings toughness, no quit in him, amazing on read and react skills, *Ikenna Nwokeji, DL, 6-5, 250, Thayer Academy, Randolph, Mass.- Speed, will catch runner from weakside, frame to add more lbs to get stronger, High motor, disruptive, can take on blocker and still keep outside arm free to contain edge *Demetrius Oliver, WR, 6-0, 200, Gastonia Ashbrook HS, Portsmouth, Va.- Speed, Hands, routes, most polished WR in this group, has a second gear that has NOS attached, will block *Austin Richardson, TE, 6-5, 256, East Forsyth HS, Kernersville, NC- Big Target, blocks like a 3rd OT. Has a lot of Wesley Walls similarities in the passing game, soft hands. *Adrian Williams, DB, 5-11, 165, Cape Fear HS, Fayetteville, NC- PR/KR, vision on returns, needs weight to get in the Defensive backfield. In closing I believe there is 4-5 more in this class of commits that can be real contributors, if they get in there and put in the work. I didn't list them because it depends on "IF" they get in there and put in the work.

way to realy to tell as some guys need to develop and will be redshirted hopefully our RS/Frosh are coming along see T?N articles but why burn a year of eligibility to play a back up role behind a Senior ? Olinemen need to develop The reason you don't redshirt your first recruiting class is because you are selling playing time. Coaching today is a three year plan. You reach out to guys that are a little higher level recruit and tell them that if you sign with Elon you have a very good chance to play as a true freshman. All recruits want to get on the field early. Game speed and practice speed is two different speeds. You want the true freshman to play 10-20 snaps a game, to get acclimated to the game. This means by the time he is a Jr he is ready to really contribute. This includes OL, that's why you are selling playing time to every kid you recruit in the first recruiting class. In the second you look and see what holes that you need to fill and sell playing time and start to recruit for depth but you are still looking for quality. Your third class, you can redshirt most of your players for starting a powerhouse program. I did read the TimesNews articles, they came out after I wrote my posts, Swepson figured it out a year to late. He shouldn't have redshirted those guys, he should have gotten them on the field and its going to cost him. It may cost him his job for being a year to late.

due to injuries We have some young play makers out on the field 12 guys caught passes, only Rorie is a Senior, our RB's have a good rotation Coppedge. Bennett & Bostick
I disagree That We have a 3 year program, BCS schools like Basketball one and dones just do not exist on our level. Swepson is in his 3rd signing class and recruiting his forth. We do have issues with guys that were redshirted and then leave the program after 4 years w/ degree in hand so that hurts experience. defensively it's easier to get guys on the field earlier if they have game speed like you said. but you know so much more in having a year or so to develop. on the other hand you a recruit signee coming in wanting to get playing time and I am all for getting a lot of quality participation and developing depth. I wonder how many recruits were visiting yesterday?

Let me clarify the 3 yr "plan". A new coach has 3 years to set forth his foundation for his program. I am not saying Elon is a 3 year program, I am saying there is a 3 year "plan" that is followed by coaches. If you deviate from that "plan", there will be gaps in the program. Swepson deviated by going with redshirts early. A new coach doesn't have the luxury to redshirt until his 3rd or 4th yr of recruiting at 1 school. Its a proven formula and you can see the results when you deviate.

Did he lose players in the system and have to fill spots with red shirts or did he not approve of the talent he inherited???

Almost every college coach would like to red-shirt every single one of his recruits. Jim Grobe at Wake made this an art form that led to a lot of wins. It may seem like heresy to say this but we always had attrition under Pete. We were as never as deep as one would think and the cupboard was not as full as one would expect. Add that factor on top of the normal attrition that occurs when a coaching change - presto! This is part of the problem. Going back to recruiting, we never have had a problem attracting skill players. It is the lines that we have had a problem building up. Jason has been addressing that.
All told, recruiting is an inexact science at all levels. Especially our level. I have really enjoyed seeing Jason and his staff build up the walk-on program. This was an area that Elon has trouble with. Walk on at an in-state school for $15,000? or Elon for $40,000??? We need depth and at the FCS level it comes from walkons. Jack Williams and Rob Sullivan are two walk on players who are on the two deep. Not to mention Thuc Phan at RB.
Football is still won on the recruiting trail and in the weight room. Not to mention the line play and QB position. We actually are making strides in all of these areas. Jason has learned from his mistakes and we were not in the shape numbers wise we should have been with Pete's success.
That should cover it.

Hey Elon fans...we're just two weeks into the football season and you guys are already talking about recruits. Have you guys written off this season in hopes of having better talent next year? I hope not. You have a game this Saturday with the players on the team now. We hope you will come to Greensboro on Saturday to cheer them on.
What makes college football so much fun is not really knowing what will happen on game day. Players on paper sometimes never become real players on the field. So don't give up on your team yet...the recruits you have now need your support. See you at Aggie Stadium Saturday evening. Aggie Pride!

We haven't written off this year by no means. Today's perserverance breeds tomorrow's success. We love our football at Elon! We never give up and always believe. Our fans are rabid. We want to know every aspect of what is going on with our program. Our football fans cheer for our team of the present and the future.
