We open up conf play against GSU. GSU is a good team this year and their on a hot streak right now. While some of their offense scores are inflated due to the teams they played they still are a potent team. We need to step up our game on the mound and the plate if we want to win this weekends series. My prediction is a 2-1 or a 1-2 weekend with neither team sweeping

It is Conference play time!!!!
Weekend Series: Georgia Southern (15-2) at Elon (11-6) Game times: Friday 6PM, Saturday 4PM, Sunday 1:30PM
Starting rotation for Elon will be Baker, Stalzer, & Elefante. All 3 have been solid so far this year. Georgia Southern has put up some impressive numbers, but their last 14 games have all be at home. We need to put an end to their 8 game winning streak this afternoon.

Complete game shutout by Bakker to start the series off.

GSU wins the first game 7-4 and Elon takes the rubber match 4-2. The pitching was solid all the way around. That was a big series win to start the conference season. An equally as big series next weekend and NC State on Wed.
Go Phoenix!

Split a double header today to take the series win. Good start to the SoCon season with a series win over one of the better teams in the league.

Both games Sat were grate games. We just couldn't seem to hit it where the other team didn't have players. We did make a few mental errors but corrected them in the second game. At least next weekend We have WCU at home seeing there on a big win streak at their place.

WCU at home this weekend. They were the preseason pick for SoCon champion. Pretty solid club but the haven't gotten off to a great start. Would be nice to get another series win over a top team in the conference.

FYI. From Burlington Times News:
Elon's error-filled defense causes crumbling in loss to Western Carolina By Matt Krause / Times-News correspondent Published: Monday, March 24, 2014 at 01:08 AM.
ELON — A season-high seven errors led to five unearned runs given up by the Elon baseball team Sunday afternoon in an 9-7 loss to Western Carolina at Latham Park.
“If that’s what we are, we’re going to be in trouble,” Elon coach Mike Kennedy said. “We didn’t play well. We’ve got to play better.”
The game was halted for 3 hours and 13 minutes with one out in the top of the third inning due to heavy rains.
Before the stoppage, the visiting Catamounts plated a pair of runs — a sacrifice fly from Adam Martin set up by a passed ball in the first inning, along with an RBI single from first baseman Jacob Hoyle in the third. Kennedy opted not to send starter Michael Elefante back to the mound after the lengthy delay in which the team ate and waited to get back on the field.
Jacob Baker took over for Elon (14-9 overall, 3-3 Southern Conference).
The Phoenix tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI triple from Casey Jones and an RBI groundout from Chris Hall.
Western Carolina (13-9, 2-1) plated single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Only one of those runs, when Martin scored on a sacrifice fly by Jacob Hoyle in the seventh, was earned.
Western Carolina starter Jordan Smith, who pitched on both sides of the delay, was lifted after six innings with only the two runs allowed on six hits with six strikeouts. In his final inning, Elon stranded the bases loaded thanks to back-to-back strikeouts by Nick Zammarelli and D.J. Paone.
Elon got two runs back in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Jones and pinch-hit double from Tyler McVicar. With Elon trailing by a run headed to the eighth, reliever Ryan Pennell came in and coughed up three more runs in an inning where two errors were committed behind him.
Trailing by four in the bottom of the eighth, Ryan Cooper blasted Elon’s first home run in more than a month — a three-run homer over the left field fence to cut the deficit back to one.
“I wanted to square a ball up,” Cooper said. “Haven’t really done that the last couple games. (I) got to a 3-2 count, (he) threw a fastball up and I put it over the fence.”
Western Carolina added an insurance run in the ninth and set down the Phoenix in order to earn the victory. It took 3 hours, 46 minutes of actual game time.
Smith (3-2), a senior out of Providence Grove, earned the victory — the 20th of his career. Baker (0-2) took the loss in relief.

Errors have played a big part in a few games. Need to buckle down and just make the plays. That said, a 3-3 start against the teams picked 1-2 in the conference isnt bad - just have to think it could probably have been 4-2 with series wins against them both.

Got a seed over the Citadel this weekend to improve to 6-3 in the conference, which is currently 3rd place.

Nice to see them sweep. The Citadel is really struggling right now, but any time you sweep in conference it's a good weekend. Two very winnable games this week and then the first road conference series in Birmingham. Got to get over these midweek struggles.
Go Phoenix!

1st road SoCon game is a win. Half followed the game tracker and seemed as though they did alright minimizing the damage in bad innings again, which is good. Also maximized on offense scoring all 7 in 2 innings. Want to win this first road series.

Yeah, that was just a bad series all around. It's one thing to get swept, but they were dominated. Pitching has come back down to earth and it looks like they don't have the bats to keep pace.
With Coastal being cancelled today, the 30 win season streak isn't looking as sure as it was a week or so ago. Conf tourney seeding is not looking quite as good either.
I'll be there Friday for Davidson. Hoping to see a different team.
Go Phoenix!
