Now that the Freshmen are on campus and We look ahead to the 2014 Season I wanted to probe a bit into the X's and O's but really this squad that Coach Rich has assembled is really a young untested group with some key experience. There simply a lot of unanswered questions that this season will either confirm or expose. Firstly: We only have like 10 Seniors and they breakdown 2 ways 5th year red-shirts and 4th year guys that got playing time early. The 5th year guys that were on the roster as true Freshmen in 2010 and recruited by the Lembo staff came off a 25 man group that included a hand full of players that did exhaust their eligibility but very few. Our Senior groups 5th yr Sr.s OL Austin Sowell all conference type tackle, initially was a DL DL NT Dustin Ruff finally got playing time last season LB Johnathan Spain 4 year starter and leader of the defense WR Kierre Brown 1 season suspended gave him this extra year our best experienced wide-out DB Akeem Langham hope his head injuries are behind him but has been a top contributor QB Mike Quinn returning QB Hope the new system agrees with him as Skrosky's recruit They know each other
RB Carl Bostick transfer from Akron is a part of RB by Committee
4th Yr Seniors LS Michael Crispi 4 yr starter excellent skills LB Odell Benton starter DL Michael Pearson part time starter last 3 seasons
Recruiting classes get broken up so there are 4th year juniors that are on the roster and We will be featured shortly but remember 25 Freshmen were on roster and now We have 10 seniors total.
If you you have any comments in particular please have at it...

The number of true Freshmen is now at 15 and in my opinion if possible it would be great to red-shirt the whole class but normally skilled positions can get playing time and Trey Lennon could use some seasoning, remember even the great Terrell Hudgins was red-shirted. transfers Marquise Wright & Chris Blair should find their way into starting positions. 17 red-shirted freshman have survived a coaching change and adopting into a new system and made the cut 23 sophomores many untested are the core and line up with another 23 juniors so in my eyes We have a lot of un-tapped potential Note: when Pete Lembo's staff came onboard the cupboard was so bare the O-line started together so long the top 6 got all the playing time as they improved as a group. I believe the quality of our recruits is in a much healthier state than what Pete inherited 10 years ago. Let's see how they develop

I am a fan down in Wilmington where I watched the red-shirt freshman TE R.J. Pearsall from EA Laney his junior and senior year. As a former high school coach with over fifteen years experience I can tell you this kid is a beast. He definitely was not used to his full potential by the past coaching staff. At 6'5" 240, his current weight, he is a match-up nightmare for almost any secondary. I talked with former DL coach Jerrick Hall from Swepson's regime about this last year and they were actually gonna move him to WR this year had Swepson survived. He can run a sub 4.6 forty at that bodyweight so he could play the position. He has a cannon for an arm also and I hear he could easily take over the longsnapping duties if needed. In Swepson's words, he told R.J. that he wanted him to be Elon's "Megatron". I've seen him play and if Coach Skrosky and Coach Wroblewski intend to incorporate the TE more into the offense like every other team these days, they have a future star on their hands. I have family up near Greensboro so I hope to catch some games and see for myself this season. "Go Phoenix"

"Go Phoenix" We will be breaking down the depth via position as you stated He was red-shirted so He did not use up a wasted year of eligibility. I saw him during spring drills too & boy is this kid a stud.

Breakdown on 2014 roster - wide receivers one area that Elon is known for is our passing game and having a great passing game over the years We can chuck it with anyone. It has been great to have a great go to guy. But We also have had terrific second bananas and I hate to use that term but Mayers, Williamson, Jeffcoat,Peterson & others played key rolls to go along with All-Americans Hudgins & Mellette.
This years group is hard to figure who is going to play wideout or slot but I do not think anything is set in stone, Senior Kierre Brown 5th yr has to have the most experience and is an all around threat. Trey Lennon our 6-3 freshman is our tallest but will be green and it is hard to evaluate new talent and red-shirts like a Demetri Allison who looked good when I saw him this spring. 6-2 Ricky Brown lost 2 inches since he was recruited out of West Forsyth but this 4th year junior needs know his time is now. Andre' Davis and Justin Osborne give us speed and yards after the catch.
4 Andre Davis WR 5-10 185 Jr. Bunn, N.C. / Bunn 5 Ricky Brown WR 6-2 206 Jr. Winston-Salem, N.C. / West Forsyth 14 Demetrius Oliver WR 6-0 208 R-Fr. Portsmouth, Va. / Ashbrook (N.C.) 18 Justin Osborne WR 5-8 164 So. Jacksonville, Fla. / First Coast 20 Lichota Seidewand WR 5-10 162 Jr. Chatham, Mass. / Nauset Regional 31 Kierre Brown WR 5-9 173 Sr. Charlotte, N.C. / Independence 32 Demitri Allison WR 5-11 172 So. Cornelius, N.C. / Southlake Christian 80 Tre Lennon WR 6-3 165 Fr. Greensboro, N.C. / Smith 81 Efrim Borders WR 6-0 180 Fr. Shelby, N.C. / Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy 84 Bryant Beaulieu WR 5-11 189 R-Fr. Greenville, N.C. / D.H. Conley 86 Jack Heitz WR 6-2 190 Fr. Chesterfield, Mo. / Saint Louis Priory School

Breakdown on 2014 Tight-ends
So much of football is based on schemes and a teams philosophy. this has always intrigued me as a player and coach and now a days there are some really mad scientists and also a lot re-packaged formations. ie Duke does run a lot of single-wing or seems like a single wing to me. but back to tight-ends. Looking at our roster, I like our height and experience with several players 6-4- 6-6 Doug Warrick is a returning starter but new recruit John Luke Arrington has pretty much the same size but are not huge which might be a blessing as last season recruit Austin Richardson grew into a right tackle. RJ Pearsall has gotten a lot of positive vibes and is the biggest and most athletic potential play-maker. He now wears #15 so maybe We could actually spread our 6-6 guys into the flanks and really give some defensive coordinators real headaches matching up with that kind of height or just really put some H-Backs in motion to give us some type of bonified running game, Jesse Tate & Zach Duprey migh give us this flexibility. or throw to Richardson on a tackle eligible. These guys need find their way onto the field and stay healthy.
15 R.J. Pearsall TE 6-4 229 R-Fr. Castle Hayne, N.C. / E.A. Laney 38 Zach Duprey TE 6-1 230 Jr. Stanardsville, Va. / William Monroe 82 Doug Warrick TE 6-6 226 Jr. Hamilton, N.J. / Cheshire Academy 88 Jesse Tate TE 6-1 220 So. Toms River, N.J. / Toms River North 89 John Luke Arrington TE 6-6 226 Fr. Springboro, Ohio / Springboro

Warwick could easily convert to WR. Speedy, great hands and after the catch moves.

Warwick could easily convert to WR. Speedy, great hands and after the catch moves. isn't that what I was trying to say? but you articulated it much better, One cannot look backward but think if converted QB Trevor Vasey had not quit We would have another 6-6 WR that would have been impressive. realistically the tight end in the recent past was not a main target but Offense 101 says key your play-makers to make plays

And with the much heralded Pearsall kid coming on line, it would be nice to have him and Warrick on the field at the same time, a lot.

Breaking down the 2014 roster : Running-backs
We have a half of an octopus in our running back by committee in that the 4 have been doing this for 3 seasons this is not the 4 horsemen Bostick (transfer), Phan, Coppedge, & Bennett seem to play rolls but only Bennett has size over 6' and Bostick seems to be more powerful and Coppedge has speed and Phan is just freaky. We are a just a throw first primary team that needs that change of pace and someone that can get 2 yards on a 3rd &2 or can cover ground on a draw or screen. We did not recruit a running back this season but already have a commit. This is just an area that needs attention and the CAA has runners that can eat the clock.
10 Karl Bostick RB 5-8 203 Sr. Englewood, N.J. / Univ. of Akron 21 Thuc Phan RB 5-6 163 Jr. Greensboro, N.C. / Deerfield Academy (Mass.) 22 Tracey Coppedge RB 5-8 168 Jr. Nashville, N.C. / Southern Nash 33 B.J. Bennett RB 6-1 216 So. West Columbia, S.C. / Hammond School 35 Matt McClary RB 5-9 205 R-Fr. Smithfield, Va. / Smithfield 37 Kelly Brooks-Muse RB 5-10 170 R-Fr. Vienna, Va. / Oakton 49 Brandon Gentry RB 5-11 190 R-Fr. Monroe, N.C. / Piedmont

I think this is an area in which we are in need. Bostic looked good in the latter half of the 2013 season and in the spring game, but we don't have anyone who can make a hole. Ie. they all need a great offensive line. If Coppedge could gain about 25 pounds of muscle he might be ok. BJ showed promise, but if he was so much as touched below mid thigh he fell down last season. We need a BJ with Bostic's balance and ability to keep his feet moving when he gets initial contact. I don't know anything about McClary, Brooks-Muse (is he married and using his maiden name?), or Gentry. Can anyone shed some light on them?

Breaking down the 2014 roster: Quarterbacks
5th year senior starter Mike Quinn returns and is backed upped by John Loughery a Swepson recruit and 1st cousin of "Matty Ice" Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons. Quinn is a solid starter but is not any type of running threat. or has not shown it so far.
Coach Skrosky's offense is centered around a great passing game. My reasoning #1 for why He was hired. He was hired as his track record is so solid in this area. A balanced running is also important. But We do not need to be turn-over prone. #1 Our Quarterback play must improve and includes play calling.
7 Mike Quinn QB 6-3 202 Sr. Wayne, N.J. / Wayne Hills 9 Conor Hughes QB 6-1 175 Fr. Basking Ridge, N.J. / Ridge 11 John Loughery QB 6-5 216 So. Wayne, Pa. / Hun School 12 Connor Christiansen QB 6-0 180 Fr. Fishers, Ind. / Fishers 13 Joey March QB 6-0 186 R-Fr. Loganville, Ga. / Walnut Grove

I am continuing this but thought I would be getting a bit more feedback
Breaking down the 2014 roster Offensive Line
This is probably the most critical area of any football team and We have some athletes with size and power. A lot of work has gone into developing this group no doubt but We have some depth. but injuries always make this group a patchwork in recent seasons. anyone have a clue as to a depth chart here?
