I do go to almost every signing day luncheon and see tape on all the guys that just cannot miss. I like the one's that come out of their redshirt season and hit the field running. Okay of course injuries happen but both Chris Jones & Mike Warren have top talent but We have to put some playmakers rush/ sack artists on the field. Defense is an attitude and can be built front to back or vise a versa . We do need have speed on the edge. We just are not very deep here,

One or two players on a unit do not make a team either. You could put Clowney on a team with a less than mediocre unit & the opponent would still gain yards. He would get his stats but the team will still lose. The supporting cast and teamwork are of primary importance.

We did graduate 3 of our 4 starters plus a couple deletions of promising talent. So there are opportunities and as a player all you want is that chance. There will be a new attitude on defense just from our coaching changes, first things first let's get these guys to tackle.

Petroni, our sophomore punter, should also be pretty highly touted this year as well.

Adam Smith on QB competition
By Adam Smith / Times-News Published: Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at 00:44 AM.
ELON — The Elon football team has an incumbent quarterback and yet the competition at that position remains an open one.
First-year coach Rich Skrosky instituted a clean-slate approach in spring practices with Mike Quinn, who started all 12 games last season, and John Loughery, the backup from a year ago.
It became a leveled playing field that extended to the end of the spring, carried through summer workouts and was renewed Monday night, as Elon held its first practice of preseason training camp.
Skrosky’s rationale is simple behind the equal stance on the quarterbacks.
Might as well be fair and certain.
“I feel like you never know how a kid is going to take to the style of coaching we’re going to give him,” he said, “and I think it’s only right to give ‘Lock’ as good of a chance as Mike.
“Mike has played and there’s no substitution for experience. So if you said who has an edge, just game experience in itself will tell you that. But I think it’s in the team’s best interest to just make sure this is who it should be.”
Elon begins the season Aug. 30 at Duke.
To Skrosky, next week forms something of a target area for deciding on a quarterback starter. The Phoenix’s first of four preseason scrimmages is scheduled for Aug. 11 — the team’s ninth practice session of training camp — and Skrosky said he would prefer to be settled on a pecking order exiting that scrimmage.
“We might not know by then, but that’s what I would like to have happen,” he said. “We’ll name a starter sooner rather than later. I won’t let it go too late. I’ve never been a two-quarterback guy.”
Quinn, a redshirt senior, threw all but 27 of Elon’s 469 passes last season and was recruited to Elon out of high school by Skrosky, when he served as the offensive coordinator for Pete Lembo, the former Elon and current Ball State coach.
Loughery, a redshirt sophomore, appeared in mop-up duty seven times last season, when the Phoenix finished 2-10 after losing its final six games. He’s a cousin of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and signed with Elon under former coach Jason Swepson, who was fired and replaced by Skrosky.
“ ‘Lock’ has some inherent traits,” Skrosky said. “He’s impressed us. He’s a real bright kid. He’s as hard a worker as we have in our program. He studies the game and enjoys studying the game.
“And Mike’s work ethic has really impressed me. I think he’s had a good summer. They both had good summers, and at the end of the day there’s never anything wrong with competition.”
It’s familiar territory, in a sense, for Skrosky.
When Lembo’s staff arrived at Ball State, Skrosky oversaw an open quarterback competition there between Keith Wenning and Kelly Page, now Elon’s director of football operations. Wenning won out and ultimately became Ball State’s all-time leading passer.
Meanwhile, Quinn is coming off a 2013 season in which he set a Southern Conference record by putting together a streak of 210 straight passes without an interception. He threw for three touchdowns in three games and compiled 2,618 passing yards on the season.
Quinn worked with the first-team offense and Loughery the second-stringers as Elon wrapped up practice Monday night. One of the final completions of the session was a nicely threaded ball from Quinn to tight end Zach Duprey, who made a nifty catch for a healthy gain.
“I’m confident in both those guys,” Elon offensive lineman Austin Sowell said, referring to Quinn and Loughery. “Whoever wins it will get the job done for us, and I think the coaches will make the right decision.”
How will either Quinn or Loughery distinguish himself? Skrosky said the eventual starter will be the most efficient and consistent performer.
“The guy who makes good decisions, is a leader on the team, runs the offense the way it needs to be run,” he said, “those will be the traits when we do name the starter.”

It'll be interesting to see how this unfolds. The fact that Quinn is working out with the 1's tells me he's definitely has the upper hand.

Let's see how they scrimmage , I think the point is no one should feel like they are set in their position and everyone will get a fair shot. Austin Sowell OT is now the center and my guess the OL signal caller a stategic move.

Breaking down the 2014 roster : Running-backs We have a half of an octopus in our running back by committee in that the 4 have been doing this for 3 seasons this is not the 4 horsemen Bostick (transfer), Phan, Coppedge, & Bennett seem to play rolls but only Bennett has size over 6' and Bostick seems to be more powerful and Coppedge has speed and Phan is just freaky. We are a just a throw first primary team that needs that change of pace and someone that can get 2 yards on a 3rd &2 or can cover ground on a draw or screen. We did not recruit a running back this season but already have a commit. This is just an area that needs attention and the CAA has runners that can eat the clock. 10 Karl Bostick RB 5-8 203 Sr. Englewood, N.J. / Univ. of Akron 21 Thuc Phan RB 5-6 163 Jr. Greensboro, N.C. / Deerfield Academy (Mass.) 22 Tracey Coppedge RB 5-8 168 Jr. Nashville, N.C. / Southern Nash 33 B.J. Bennett RB 6-1 216 So. West Columbia, S.C. / Hammond School 35 Matt McClary RB 5-9 205 R-Fr. Smithfield, Va. / Smithfield 37 Kelly Brooks-Muse RB 5-10 170 R-Fr. Vienna, Va. / Oakton 49 Brandon Gentry RB 5-11 190 R-Fr. Monroe, N.C. / Piedmont Just heard Bostick broke a leg in last night's scrimmage. Don't know how accurate that is. Very sad, if true.

I did not see anything listed on the Fan Appreciation Day recap on the scrimmage. I know there have been hand injuries and foot issue w/ an O lineman. sure there are numerous nagging issues as this football, personally I prefer to list injuries and things of this order in the Elon Only section so rumors can be vetted.

Giving other teams any info on a player or recruit is the least of our worries.
