We spend WAAAAAY to much time trying to find the open shot. we are said to be an up tempo team... uh no. UNF is an up tempo team. so far we have 15 points in the first 14 minutes. We are running our SLOW motion offense.

4 or 5 Winters shots were blocked in the first half & several rebounds were grabbed over his head. Hairston had a big dunk in transition and a rebound just afterward. Winters 14 minutes 2 points 2 rebounds, Hairston 4 minutes 4 points 1 rebound.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Hairston transfer after this season. Too much talent bottled up. No chance for in bound dunks or alley oops etc. They have him throwin in the ball from the opposite baseline after shots and OB's. I don't know why Matt is so down on him.

I don't understand why Elon is always so committed to boring basketball. We have a reasonably athletic team this year. Reminds me of Seagraves in football. Had athletes, but couldnt get past the 3 yards & a cloud of dust. Slow. Boring.

Coaching lost this game BIG TIME. I sincerely hope this changes. We have so much unutilized talent. Matt should have recruited slow tall guys and more 3pt shooters if he was going to continue to run the SLOW motion offense. SO disappointing! SLOW disappointing!

The bigs are slow and unathletic. They nearly cost Elon the game yesterday and did today. Both UNF and Morgan dominated the offensive boards.
Good news is the guards continue to play really well and keep Elon in games. Can you imagine if there was an inside threat of any kind?
Go Phoenix!

Hairston plays like a deer in headlights. A dunk or two does not make a player. He's tenatiive with the ball. Needs to get stronger as well.
Winters, Anton and Sabato are just not athletic enough at this level. They have to do the dirty work. However, we are guard driven team in the end.
We are relying on two freshman to play huge minutes at the guard position. Not a situation at our level you want to rely on.
Mid-major programs are known for their veteran guard play. We are lacking it at the moment. Samson can shoot it. However, he has trouble making his own shot. Blake can run and dunk. That's about it.
We are in for a long year. Sadly, this lack of talent overall should not happen with a coach in his sixth year.

Sadly, this lack of talent overall should not happen with a coach in his sixth year. 1. Say what you want about Hairston, but RIGHT NOW he is better than Winters. Given some PT and more freedom to create off the fast break he could be a star. He plays like a "deer in the headlights" because they're trying to turn him into a slow "system" player versus an athletic threat. He would be a starter and a star on the UNF team. 2. I agree with the Winters and Sabato comment. Sabato played way above his head against FAU. He's back to being the old Sabato now. Winters isn't a crappy player, He's just slow. He's crafty, but you can't ask him to go against 6'6"+ athletic players down low. He would be good coming off the bench for 8 - 10 minutes per game. I'm going to hold comments on Anton for now. He isn't that good right now but he appears to have potential. 3. I'm not sure to which two guards you're referring, but if Bryant is one of them, let's keep on having him play huge minutes. The kid is a monster. I'm really excited to see what he'll be at the end of the season. He does a great job at point. He's not selfish but can really create if he needs to. He's the one that keeps us in games so far, IMO. Leddy and Hamilton are about even at point in my book. Leddy is more aggressive and creative but Hamilton appears to be more of a leader and assists better as well as hitting the 3 better. Of course they are not freshmen first year. If Thompson is the other first year to whom you refer, I agree he is young & raw. But he is athletic and appears to be able to hit the 3 occasionally. Like Anton , He appears to have a lot of potential. 4. Samson can shoot, but he's way too streaky to be taking 10 to 12 shots or more per game. With our rebounding, or lack thereof, this wastes too many possessions. I still have hope for Samson this season, but he really needs to get to at least 36-38% on his 3pt. attempts. I had hope for Blake, but I'm afraid his aggressiveness has been trained out of him. He's very athletic, but at 6'3", he's going to have to be MUCH more aggressive in driving the lane and creating his own shots. 5. I too am afraid we're in for a long year, but I don't think we have to be. Our "system" needs to fit our talent. I think the system needs to be designed to score, not to serve the system. One last comment on Hairston. Even if you feel he doesn't fit well into the system, he has proven at least that he is a good rebounder. If nothing else he should get more minutes than he does for rebounding alone.

Neither is playing right now. Dawkins isn't really a "big" at 6'8" and George is apparently "not ready for prime time" and will be redshirted. But if your referring to Winters, Sabato and Anton, I agree. Dawkins is being sorely missed right now. I hope he will return for conference play.

I only call them "bigs" because that's the role they are being forced to play, but yeah, I'm referring to Winters, Sabato and Anton. None of them have been very effective since the FAU game. Sabato is listed as a 6'7" center? That should be cause for concern alone. I think Dawkins is better than Winters and Sabato, but he's still undersized. I'll give Anton the benefit of the doubt since he's played a grand total of 5 games. He has shown some versatility at least though. Anyhow, we knew this would be an issue. I think several of us kept asking about where the true center was when recruiting. Go Phoenix!

Wow, lots of negativity about this team.
This team is playing pretty well against some good competition, and better than probably most of us imagined before the season began. To quote the Northwestern guard: "But this Elon team was one of the toughest, scrappiest teams I've ever played against. Their coaches do a great job."
We have a pretty young team that is obviously learning quickly. I have to be honest, I'm pleasantly surprised the team is at .500 right now, and 1 bucket away from being 4-2.
Congrats to team on a tough road win yesterday at Miami (OH).

I'm not down on the whole team. They are playing better than I would have expected. However, take a look at the box score and the minutes some played compared to their stat line.
Bryant and Eddy continue to play exceptionally well and Thompson is starting to look more comfortable. It looks like Hairston's minutes are going to continue to increase as well, which should give him more opportunities to show what he can do. Really good win for the team yesterday. The future is definitely bright.
After this week they should be 5-3. I was one who predicted 7-9 wins in the poll, so they have a good chance of proving me wrong. I hope they do.
Go Phoenix!

I really like Matheny. I think the team is much better that I originally expected them to be. Matheny did a great job in recruiting. Sometimes when a set of players is new and inexperienced, the coach will HAVE to force them into the system in order for them to win in the long run. I am very competitive and hate to see the team lose if I think there is/was a chance for them to win. However, the easy road would be to let them run & gun, but in the long run, defenses in our conference would figure out how to stop the 3 or 4 players we have with the run/gun capability. Therefore it would be detrimental to the team in the long run to drop the system & revert to their nature. When adversity strikes, it's the system that allows the team to get through and still win. My apologies for the criticism of what I see as the strongest coaching staff we've had here at Elon. When our current first year & sophomore players are able to function in the system effortlessly, and when we are able to recruit and train a couple of true "bigs", we'll have a conference champion team.
