ELON, N.C. – On a beautiful Monday afternoon, the Elon football team began its spring preparations for the 2015 campaign. The Phoenix hit the Hunt and Tucker practice fields for just over two hours.
Here are some thoughts from head coach Rich Skrosky as spring ball gets going:
Skrosky on moving on from last year:
"I hope we learned from it. We are building a familiarity with the opponents. I don't think you should ever throw anything away. I think you should learn from it. One of the things we're doing in the spring, each day we will talk about an opponent. Today was Wake Forest. We give them a quiz. We want them to know some details about each opponent. The year's anew. We'll be a younger team this year than we were last year."
Skrosky on his staff:
"It's great having the whole staff back. I'm grateful for that. For me to have everyone back, it helps everybody. From doing the practice plan, to doing the script, to how we're going to practice, it just makes things so much easier. The kids are hearing the same language."
Skrosky on a difference this spring compared to last:
"I said it last spring. We have to coach the details. We really couldn't coach the details because we were trying to put the macro spin on it – here's the pace of practice, we don't take our helmets off. When you're coaching that stuff, you can't coach details. I think I'm expecting now, John Silas, he knows how we practice so he should know the exact detail of every single call. We can focus in on a little bit more detail than we were able to the first year."
Skrosky on the quarterbacks:
"Connor (Christiansen) has gone through a whole year. Daniel (Thompson) is a real competitor. He doesn't get flustered. I think he has a composure about him. The biggest thing for him is that he makes steps each day. Early on Connor will inherently have a comfort level. Every day, I'm excited when I come in to see those two guys. They both love football, they're both competitive guys. They have an easiness about them."
Skrosky on the message he's been sending the team:
"We've been using the word strain a lot. You can't just do what you're asked to do. You have to take it over the top. We did a bunch of leadership things. We hit on compliant and compelled. Compliant is ok, but I don't know if that will win you a championship. You need guys that are compelled. We brought David Harrison (former All-American offensive lineman) back. He got them fired up. That's what he told them – 'You can't just do what the coaches tell you. If you can lift 305, you can lift 315. You can do a gasser in 16? Do it in 15. Be compelled to be great.'"
