First 25 minutes were awful offensively. No running game. Run on second down for zero yards - every single series. And UNH defended the read option perfectly, never letting CC run. And receivers... Not sure where to start. No separation at all. And so we go to the bubble screen and the ball gets there just before the defender - blocking would be nice. And the drops. I quit counting a couple games ago. Once UNH went to a loose zone defense and we quit even trying to run, we gained yards with DT. But don't crown him just yet. You don't throw 4 picks and earn anything. There's a reason CC didn't go back in the game, and it wasn't lack of performance, though clearly the O went nowhere early in the game. You seem like a CC guy. I am sure he is a good guy and a gamer but clearly Daniel lead the only scoring drives. And you say that CC didn't go back in because of lack of performance and then acknowledge that the offense went nowhere with him in the game. It seems like you don't want to give DT any credit.

You're wrong, Simpson. I do give credit to DT. I simply said don't anoint him. Four picks, could/should have been a couple more, including a pick 6.

our issues at QB are going to be mercurial as both are inconsistent. It does not help that there is no go-to guy or a home run threat. We are now in a stretch of our CAA gauntlet that is going to look at little things as growth. I believe that fundamentals are exposed or revealed. Let's hope for improvements.

Well, that stunk. We are a one dimensional at the moment. Four picks does not announce an arrival to me.
The one thing I was disappointed in was it looked like we were not ready to play. We were done after the second drive.

I agree that the team did not look ready to play. If we could erase the first quarter it was a fairly competitive game, 17-14. And one of UNH second quarter TDs was set up by blocked punt. Elon actually won second half, 7-3.
I think DT clearly won starting job with his play. He was able to spread the ball around and find open receivers. He also seems to throw a much more catchable balll than CC. Yes, he probably forced a few throws in trying to get us back in the game. Even so, a couple of his interceptions were 50/50 balls where defender was more aggressive. All in all, I thought he showed excellent poise and was able to establish rhythm with receivers downfield.

On a positive note. We saw last night that the offense can move the ball and score. Unfortunately after ~5 games CC still can not get it done. Most of the drops were poor throws. At least DT got some results. The whole team looked different with him in there. Connected on some passes and then the running game picked up. Dont see how the coaches could put CC back in after that game. After so many 3 and outs DT goes in and moves the team right down the field. Twice. Enough said.

Two drives, one against UNH backups, and you anoint the kid? Your criteria is lamely low. Why not say CC got two wins, not just two drives? How the hell you ignore four picks in three quarters boggles my mind. Truth is NEITHER has earned the spot. Not yet.

Homer agree with you. 4 pics gets you benched not annoited the starter. The issues run deep. No run game at all! How often do you see our O-Line getting a push 3 to 5 yards? How often do see one OL hitting a linebacker or someone in the opposing secondary? There is zero push and no where to run. The offense has zero imagination.. Run up the middle for no gain and bubble screen for a loss. How many times did UNH throw across the middle 5 to 10 yards downfield? BTW, their running game is really good because their OL is really good. Blew our DL up and made life miserable for our linebackers. One thing we know, our secondary isn't that fast and they cant tackle. Someone mentioned in an earlier post that skrosky is here for the long term and plans to retire in the area. Do you want a head coach on edge or someone given a mandate to take their time? read the psot game comments on this link and tell me which team has an edge to their mindset and which HC has one as well? We need to get comfortable being uncomfortable. www.concordmonitor.com/home/18879799-95/unh-football-team-doesnt-let-visiting-elon-find-a-comfort-zone-in-blowout-victoryLook on the birght side, we can work out the kinks vs the #19 and # 6 teams in the nation the next 2 weeks prior to the bye week.

You are the only one talking about crowning or anointing DT. The truth is the coaches will start the BEST quarterback next week. Whoever that is.

Lots of comments on the QB situation. While DT did throw 4 Ints (which cannot happen), his passes were at least catchable (for both teams..) CC has yet to have a game this year where he looked comfortable throwing the ball. DT at least put "many" passes on the mark for the TE's and WR's to catch. He led them and put them in areas where our guys could make a play. Many have said CC won 2 games, that's not true. Our offense really hasn't clicked yet this season. Defense has kept us in games and on more than one drive, either penalties have assisted in keeping drives alive and moving or CC has tucked and run on short fields from a defensive turnover. I was not a fan of burning DT's available redshirt, but after this UNH game, he looked the more comfortable (maybe too?) thrower of the two. His issue clearly was staring down the receiver he was throwing to which didn't help. This is a young HS QB issue that needs to be corrected and corrected fast.
What is more of the issue is the play calling and then the drops. Too many consecutive series we ran the ball on 2nd and 10, straight up the middle and it seemed to never catch the defense off guard or put us into manageable 3rd downs. Then we seemed to run the dreaded WR screen again too much which has not been good but maybe 2 times all season. We run it at least 4-5 times or more a game - why? The play calling has to be more creative/its still vanilla and very predictable.
However, we saw finally the use of the TE over the middle along with the WR drag over the middle and these created positive yardage and should be extension of our running game which is struggling - but used on first down not third and LONG. We DID have receivers open especially on the crossing patterns or corner routes, but DT was locked in on his preferred receiver from the snap and CC was too itchy to run or overthrowing a receiver. But there were open opportunities which were missed and usually when receivers were crossing each other. Part of the reason the WR had some issues getting open was that the UNH DB's were grabbing and holding downfield most of the afternoon which was shocking how they got away with it. The first drop we had was actually a catch and handoff of the ball for an INT...it was in his hands and just let the DB take it away. Also, not sure what is wrong with Tre, but he's not the same WR as last year - much more timid and not engaged in the game for some reason and not making plays like he did last year. This group has talent but they are not making the plays when they are available when the QB's give have given them a chance. They have to help these young QB's and make the catch when the ball is in the area - not drop it - and they MUST fight for the ball in the end zone. Make a play!
Also was it me or did Gentry look like the better runner again yesterday - albeit in his limited touches? After last week, would have thought he would have been given more oppty's.
Defense after the first quarter settled down but the tackling was horrible all game. UNH obviously has been strong for years and something we should strive to be, but until we fix the fundamentals and put together a creative game plan that is not predictable from game to game, we will be hard pressed to compete against the remaining CAA teams and will struggle to make marked improvement on offense. We have some positives to improve on as we saw more offense and what worked, now expand on them.

I'm going to blow off some steam... I just read Coach's email. There is something in this email that makes my blood boil.
"The program that Coach McDonnell has established at UNH is one that we can learn a great deal from."
This just makes me mad. We have been in FCS football for 15 years. We have been to the playoffs once. We have superior facilities to UNH. Superior campus and academics to UNH. A superior recruiting base to UNH. And what do we have to show for it. Two straight butt whippings. We should not be in a learning phase this far into our program. Our administration is to blame. One poor hire set this program back to the stone ages. We have an admin that is far too arrogant for their own good. We have a laughing stock of a program. Students don't care. Most alums don't care. We try to socially engineer everything on campus. Make everything sanitary and not fun for anyone.
I may be rambling. However, it's embarrassing to watch this team each week. Our players look like high schoolers compared to our opposition. Not to mention we run a very average scheme on offense. It is the same package we ran in 2009 with no updates. No progression. Maybe the staff should learn to get with the times. All they have to do is watch film from 2009. That's a joke.
Maybe we should go to the option. Works for Woffy.

Call me an optimist, but in response to the above (which are all fair points), I figured I point out a few of my observations from yesterday and the state of the program that I find very encouraging... So we lost to UNH at their place, a team that has set an NCAA record for consecutive weeks (165) ranked in the top 25 and you have to go back to Sat. Nov 17 of 2012 the last time UNH lost a home game (ironically it was to a team we just beat -- Towson)...so the fact we showed some fight in the second half is a great sign for the program and when you really look at the game. They scored 3 points against us in the second half....that's a huge indication that this team is going to play hard, despite the score. There was some serious home cooking being served up on homecoming weekend for UNH...there were some TERRIBLE calls that helped UNH sustain drives or put us in a deep hole...I didn't see Elon get away with anything all day. Plays like CC's first pick that should have been face guarding, the targeting call, etc. are game changers, and imagine if those calls were reversed...who knows what kind of scoring implications it could have had. we are 2-3 (1-1)...if two months ago I said we would have two wins after 5 games and one of them would be a conference win...is there anyone on here that wouldn't have taken that? We are EXTREMELY young. So 5 games in, as frustrating as it is, we have to be realistic...there will be timing issues on offense, drops, interceptions, penalties, etc. IMHO, Tre is the only one who is really underperforming from the receiving core, and our best running back (freshman summers) didn't play, so let's give these guys a couple more games to click before we question the play calling..after all DT threw for 250 yards in 3 quarters of play...you take away his 4 picks (including the one in the end zone) and the score is something more like 37-28 and we are having a completely different conversation today. Prediction for next week: DT starts, throws for 300 yards and 3 TDs and elon wins 31-28....and we are all talking about making a playoff run, instead of going to the option

Gentry wasn't hurt. 4 rushes for 20 yds and all positive rushes. Can't understand why he isn't being rushed more.

I'll bet my life savings we do not beat Richmond.
I'm trying to find the game we are going to win on the schedule. It makes my head spin that we are "Young". No other reason than our AD, in his disdain for anything Lembo at the time, hired a man that buried this program.
It's just so frustrating.
