It's his only chance to move up. Stay at a MAC school too long and it becomes a black hole for your career. He stayed two years too long. As Assistant Head Coach at Maryland, he's got a shot at something bigger and better down the road. But then again, it's Maryland, which has little chance of making any noise whatsoever in the Big 10.

He is just jumping ship again, like he did at Elon. He knew after Riddle and company graduated, Elon wasn't going to have much so he ran out of town. Not defending Swepson, but you have to realize that his first year he was playing with players from Lembo's recruiting class, that were third stringers when they were sophomore and juniors. Basically the lower rung players of Lembo's recruiting class.
He left Elon basically around this same time of the year. Right in the middle recruiting, causing many recruits to go elsewhere. Again not defending Swepson again, but his staff had to scrape the bottom of the barrel to bring in the recruits he did for his first recruiting class. Granted the next two were all on him and his staff. Which as we have seen, Skrosky and company have been dealing with the past two season.
It was a surprise that he stayed at Ball State as long as he did. He was trying to get out a couple of year's ago after Keith Wenning graduated. And as you can see, he had the two bad year's at BSU that he just had. Really surprised that when Skrosky and Bateman left, he himself didn't leave. It was interesting though to see how he could do without riding their coattails, but as you an see from the past two season at BSU it wasn't that great.
Back when he was in the running for the Wake Forest job, word in the coaching world was that once he found out they were going to go with Dave Clawson, Pete "pulled" himself out of consideration for the job before the announcement. So it would look like he turn them down, rather the apposite.
Feel free to argue or contradict my opinion, but I dealt with him first hand while he was at Elon. The way he acted in the community was totally different than how he acted around his team, staff, and administration. From what I have read over on the BSU board, they are pretty piss about all of this.
The staff at BSU found out about it from multiple news reports and had to idea that he was even talking to Maryland.
The man is nothing more than a coward.

Everything is wonderful when one is winning. He had signed an extension but a poor season and a cold winter in Muncie could have been the coop de gras Do the math only stays 5 years that's a pattern. special teams coordinator. I wish him well. BTW where is Swepson these days?

Well, speaking as one of the community and you should include the alumni in that grouping, I have a lot of respect for Lembo. During his tenure at Elon, the football team was respected. Something that no one else has done since the late 1990s. Oh, and that started with Hamilton's paltry recruits, before Riddle came. His regime was the one that recruited Riddle, btw. Also, he is the one that built Alumni Fieldhouse, which elevated our facilities to the higher end of the FCS. And don't even talk to me about that Jacka$$ Swepson. That moron took a ship that was taking on a little water and blew holes in the hull. Pete was a climber, I'll give you that. But don't disparage one of the better coaches Elon has ever had, and certainly the best since we've been D1, because he hurt your feelings. Frankly, had Wake Forest chosen Pete instead of Clawson, they'd be doing better right now. That was a boneheaded move on Wake's part IMO. Private D1 schools have up and down seasons. Show me one that doesn't. It's the program that matters. Pete is the only head coach that has worked toward building a program at Elon since Red Wilson and Jerry Tolley. I wish all the luck to Pete, Durkin and the Maryland football team. Now I have a reason to follow Terp football.

Btw, I googled Swepson. The most recent posts have him being fired from Elon. You really have to respect the fact that this guy got a job in which he worked very little for three years, sat on his butt for the last two and made more per year than he ever had in his life. SMH...

I just don't see a problem with wanting to better one's career. He's been pretty successful everywhere he's coached.
I had a few interactions with Lembo when he was coach at Elon, outside of the football realm. Very nice guy. I just don't see what the fuss is about. Of course, the business I work in is a revolving door where longevity is generally the exception.
Everyone is going to have their own opinion and that's perfectly fine, but I wish the guy well. He put Elon on the map during his short stint. Those were fun years to watch Elon football.

I agree. I enjoyed the time that Lembo was at Elon. It was a fun time to be an Elon football fan. My only interaction with him was his responses on the few occasions I emailed him after receiving one of his football update emails. He always responded with a short reply. None of the other Elon coaches have done that. I understand how busy these coaches are and do not fault them for not replying. But Lembo made that extra effort.

The staff at BSU found out about it from multiple news reports and had to idea that he was even talking to Maryland. The man is nothing more than a coward. Swep came into a winning program and had multiple upperclassmen go on to either start games for, or be drafted by, NFL teams. He then proceeded to go 5-19 in SoCon play. Making things worse, he decided to run off any remaining talent within the program because he wanted a bunch of country-club background kids from the northeast, or the worst players on a handful of good high schools here in the south that got passed up by every other respectable D1 program. Swepson ruined the program, plain and simple. His highest touted recruits were complete busts. One practice specifically I have in mind, Swep stopped the entire drill and got mad at a defensive starter for being too physical against the scout team offense. This was during a full-pad practice in August. The most riveting speech he ever gave was prior to the UNC game, where he told the team we would "beat UNC with the punt." How'd that work out? Defending Swepson is laughable. He is likely the worst investment that the Elon Athletic dept have ever made.

I think Lembo just realized he was never going to be a head coach at any school in the Power 5 conferences and decided being an assistant was the best he would ever become.
Man Swepson really pissed some of you people off. It's been almost three years since he was the coach, get over it. It wasn't like he ruin a program that was a repeated SoCon Champion and National Title Contender year in and year out. He was the coach of a program that's most major accomplishment in the past decade was making it into the FCS playoffs in 2009, and before that the program's accolade was being back to back NAIA champions in the early 80's.
So it wasn't like he destroyed some dynasty that you have built Elon football to be. When Elon achieves something, anything, a conference title, a playoff win, heck I will even take a winning season (which hasn't happened in over five year) then I may take Elon football seriously.
I wish everyone of this board a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Our History in D-1 football is documented that Pete Lembo's time has been our most successful. We moved to D-1 with a lot of growing pains from Indy to the Big South, then the SoCon and now the CAA. All major moves and coaches who made it but only one came close to changing the culture. That was Pete.
He probably got a huge pay raise w/ the new job. His resume' still and always has a successful tenure for Elon.

Doubtful he got a big pay raise. He made $517k this year so far at Ball State. I personally think he changed his strategy toward attaining a head coaching position in the P5. He will work hard and focus on making Maryland better, just as he did at Lehigh, Elon and Ball State then hope an opportunity presents itself. It's never been all about the money with Pete. It's been about achieving his goals. His goal is and always has been to be a P5 head coach. I can't imagine that would have changed.
