When the big $$$$$ donors make it clear that they want a change and want to win in this league (it CAN) there will be movement 1 a head coach that CAN recruit and be a game strategist and win 18-22 games a season 2 refer to #1

If the head coach at Elon is winning 20-22 games a season they will only be here a two or three years.

You have a problem with us winning 20 games a year? We are not a destination job. As long as we win and graduate players, I’m good with a coach moving on. It means we are winning.
But you are comfortable having a below .500 program so the coach sticks around? Nice.

Agree 100% with you here. Until we get our salary up to $6-800k, plus reasonable expenses and assistant salaries, we will not be a destination job. I'd be more than happy with a perennial 20+ win program, regardless of a coach's longevity. fc4 - you seem to know more than most on this board. I get the sense we will have Matheny again as HC next year. Heard anything?

Here's the latest available salaries for CAA jobs
1.) Northeastern: $630k in 2016 2.) Drexel- salary for Zach Spiker is unclear but Flint was paid $581k in his final season 3.) College of Charleston: 561k in 2018 4.) Hofstra: $454k in 2016 but signed an extension in 2018 so probably worth a little more 5.) Towson: $443k in 2016 6.) Delaware: unclear. Despite being a public institution, it’s not required to release salary data. Estimates put it at around $375k. 7.) Elon: $302k in 2016 7.) UNCW: $300k in 2018 with a buttload of incentives 9.) James Madison: $260k in 2016 10.) W&M 224,000 in 2014

Good info
So it seems like 400k is the average.
Keep in mind, UNCW is 300k for a new, unproven coach.
Matheny is in year 10 or whatever, making 300k.
Not that I would say Matheny deserves a raise and I would assume we would be offering our next coach 300k as well.
It is a tough job, period. It isn't even so much about offering the HC salary, but the assistant pool of money I imagine is struggling compared to others.
Most coaches in CAA is going to hire young, up and coming coaches anyway. Successful HS coaches or former players who have been grad assistants and they feel they have potential.
I know I remember App State coaching salary for assistants was avg $66k per coach and they bumped it up to around $80k.
I think Apps HC was making around $300k a year as well (similar to Matheny)
So if Elon coach sees a young coach who is killing it recruiting and is making 60k currently, would we have it in the budget to give him 90-100k to make a jump? I assume not... I would guess NE/Drexel/C of C/Hofstra could probably make it work.

No we wouldnt but then again if he is doing well in recruiting he is looking to make a jump up not a lateral move to the low level CAA. He is going A-10, Big East, AAC etc.

No way they are getting rid of Matheny. They just renewed his contract and has two years left after this year....they don't have the money nor the boosters willing to pay a buyout.
You have asked him to coach and recruit in a gym that would be considered as a bad middle school gym. You pay the coach who's been there 10 years in the bottom half of the conference. His budget and amenities for improving the program are near the bottom as well.
Matheny needs two to three years in Schar before you are going to see any impact with recruits.
Bobby Lutz references are a joke. He was a crook at Charlotte, got let go at NC State to help cover Gottfried's transgressions and Blank wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot pole. Not arguing that he's not a good X & O guy, but he was and still is a dirty, cheating coach. Everyone in the business knows that.

Season over after Elon lays an egg in the CAA tourney. What does this team look like next year? Can it be any worse?

Matheny has been able to give the schar proposal to recruits for 3 plus years. No facility, budget, or amount of resources can make up for some of the worst talent evaluation in all of division 1. Come to terms with the fact that he can’t build a competing team and program and move on. The guy wouldn’t know an above average athlete at our level if he saw one. Let’s keep chucking threes with worse players next players. Seibring and Santa Ana allowed this joke of a coach to hold a position he didn’t deserve for several additional years. Sick of the defeatist attitude. Matt’s a clueless salesman manipulating one of the most incompetent group of university officials in the nation. If Connie and DB put the bottle down for a minute maybe they will see a change is needed.

Throwing out a name...
Justin Gainey
Currently assisant at Arizona. Sounds like Sean Miller is probably going to be fired.
Was assisantfor 4 seasons at Elon before going to App State. I think he later went to Santa Clara before ending up at Arizona.
Greensboro native, I think he would be able to bring talent to Elon despite the challenges of budget.
Unproven coaching talent though but has experience and creditability in the state for recruiting.
Played in ACC at NCSU

Call me crazy but I think we gotta give him more time. These kids show fight and are close. With Steven and Seibring coming back next year they will only get better. He NEEDS time to settle guys into the new arena as well. It’s tough when a team is used to making the trip to Alumni from their apartments to now have to go all the way to Schar instead. Pregame routines need time to adjust and you can’t blame Matheny for that. Let him be the coach I know he can be. If I did have one suggestion for the future, though, I feel that he should make the throwing of his jacket part of the pregame routine. Something clicks with this team when they see their leader throwing that coat around. I know it makes me wanna run through a wall for him when I see that passion. If he did it before tip, they could take that fire right into the game.
In short, let’s get him some more time and see what he can really do. I haven’t changed as a person in a decade, why should he be expected to? That’s nothing to make major changes. Let’s get behind him and ride this wave into the future.
