For those thinking about Miller, think again. Wake Forest has some big boosters eyeing him to take Danny Manning's job. Don't think anybody is suggesting we go after Miller or that he would be interested, we're saying looking for someone with a similar profile might be a good way to go.

Open up the wallet & get Joel Justus. We’ll have him for 2-3 years but he knows how to recruit & could give one helluva good start toward building the program.

Justus is an interesting name. Really has the right profile between being a former assistant at Elon, coaching area high schools and a current assistant at Kentucky.
Nate James is clearly looking for his first head coaching job and would be a great fit. There should be a lot of schools after him, and I expect Elon would have to go up significantly from Matheny's salary.

I remember Joel Justis as the Wake Forest Ball boy his Dad was an innovative SID at Wake that helped develop what is now IMG Collegiate Sports Media Marketing Nate James is a top legacy coach off one of the top coaching trees. I am sure He can teach tenacious "D"

Not to be a downer, but no way Nate James is coming here...name the last Duke assistant to leave for anything other than a P5 job.
If you want a Duke guy your best bet is Greg Paulus, currently an assistant at GWU (formerly assisted at Ohio State and Louisville until the coaches left/were fired). Incidentally, profiles similarly to Wes Miller.
Really, it is unlikely that we get an assistant from ANY P5 school. We just aren't a place someone with other options is going to be looking for right now. Again, not trying to be a downer and certainly I hope we contact some of these guys because I guess you never know, but if you go in expecting guys like this you're going to be sorely disappointed. Maybe during our next coaching search after some modest success that shows someone can come here and win, but not now.

Elon should go after NATE JAMES!!! Nate is looking for his first head coaching job and nobody knows the NC recruiting trail more than him. It'd be a terrific hire for the university!!!

Yeah....now way Nate James comes here. Look at Coach K's coaching tree and see where those folks have landed.

Look I am not saying he will come, but the idea he wouldn't is a little nuts. Yeah, Collins, Wojo, Dawkins, Quin Snyder, etc. Went to P5 schools.
But Mike Brey and later David Henderson went from Duke assistant to Delaware. Tim O'Toole went to Fairfield (after going with Tommy Ammaker to Seton Hall for a season).
It's not like being a Duke assistant guarantees a P5 job, and James is also clearly on the market. In the early going here, the schools that are apparently kicking the tires (App State, George Washington) are ones Elon ought to be able to compete with. Maybe the market for him will heat up and that will change.

I think the program needs to hire a coach with head coaching experience. Someone who has worked with a smaller budget and have been successful at the D2 or D3 levell, or lower level D1 school. All of these major D1 assistants that have been mentioned are coming from programs that money is not an issue like it is at Elon. This will be a total rebuild - losing most of the scoring from this season, and nobody currently on the roster to fill even half that void.

Might be worth checking in on Tim Craft of Gardner Webb.
Will be a hot name but he comes from a school that is one of the worse jobs in the Big South (similar to Elon).
I would guess he will stay at GW and keep winning until he gets offer from bigger job but he may be up for challenge and willing to come for 300-400k
Moton at NCCU would be HR hire but doubt he would come. His name has been floating around jobs for years and never took one. He wins so much at NCCU, he can pick and choose his next landing spot.
Interested to see if Justin Gainey gets any buzz. He is from Greensboro and would be able to recruit local kids. Been assisant at App but now at Arizona.
Bobby Lutz available, doubt Elon will offer but would turn around Elon and have us competing for top 4 in conference within 3 seasons.
Lutz I view as the most realistic and safe hire. I personally think Lutz would be better at App or UNCG but no doubt he would win at Elon and get Elon relevant in CAA.

Gainey is interesting name. He fits a similar profile to Justus and I think would probably be a decent hire.
I like Lutz a lot and think Charlotte was stupid af to fire him, but as much as I like him, I don't want this to be a retirement gig where some decent name coach is just cruising to a paycheck, and that's what a Lutz hire would feel like to me.

LeVelle Moton from North Carolina Central seems like a solid option. Making $250k base may jump at $350k? He keeps winning and knows the NC area. NCAA tournament experience (although losses) shows he can get there at least.

Who knows where the search will take Elon. I think it would be interesting if Elon brought in someone with a distinct coaching/playing style, like high pressure defense or run & gun offense. Anything that is not too generic. I just think Elon needs a distinct personality.

Would love to hear they reached out to Andrew Toole or Ty Baumgardner. What has Andrew Toole done in the last 5 years? Who is the other guy? Is he a HS coach? Not saying we are a great destination but I am not down with either option. Ty Baumgardner was an assistant at Elon before going back to Emporia State, then having successful stints as a gigh school coach at Waddell, Olympic and other schools. He was on the staff that lead the 1997 team to the NCAA tournament. He knows Elon and what it takes.

Aiming way too low, we should not hire a high school coach.
