Lots of chatter today on the JMU discussion board about them moving up to the Sunbelt or C-USA.

Not surprising as it’s seemingly been on their radar for a while. Didn’t they do a feasibility study not too long ago?
Also….they have a hell of a coach to transition them!

Honestly North Dakota State should be the only team jumping up to FBS right now.

JMU needs to go as does NDSU.

JMU will definitely be a “little” fish in a BIG pond. They need to consider all other sports not just football. Their ego will not win any games.

JMU could definitely learn a lot from ODU’s many mistakes.

So current talk suggests that an official announcement early next week that JMU will be joining the Sunbelt with ODU, Marshall, and Southern Miss. Monmouth is apparently being rumored as football only addition to the CAA. Only time will tell if this really happens.

I saw an article that speculated that other CAA schools like Towson, Delaware, and Villanova might be evaluating a possible move.

As far as football goes, JMU is ready for that move. Honestly, it's where they need to be. I don't think it's a great move for the rest of their athletics program, but time will tell. I'm just ready for them to move on so the rest of the conference is not in limbo. No one wants to live in a house with someone who doesn't want to be there.
As far as how this impacts Elon, I hope there are some changes in the CAA leadership after all of this. There is nothing anyone could have done to keep JMU, but it doesn't mean the conference leadership doesn't suck. The Flo Sports deal has to end. It sucks to go to Hulu and ESPN+ and see nearly every D1 program in the country available for viewing and the CAA is lost in the far reaches of online streaming. The little money made can no way justify the loss of exposure. It's also a big middle finger to fans of these schools. Not sure how you attract other desirable schools to the conference with Flo.
Secondly, the conference championship experience feels 2nd rate in almost every sport. Campus locations for baseball, which is economical, but not a great experience. The DC hoops venue, which is horribly located. A nice venue, but nothing around. It feels like every decision results in choosing the most unproven option and trying to convince everyone it's good. I do like being associated with several of the conference schools, but I'm hoping the mentality changes. Hopefully Elon is not part of the problem.
If they're adding Monmouth for football only, I'd look to add UMBC for all other sports. Seems to be the best candidate that would likely want to make the move. Has to be better than their America East trips to Maine, UNH, Vermont and Binghamton in the winter.
I also have no idea if Elon would consider moving back to the SoCon, but the thought of Elon, W&M and Richmond (football) as package deal to the SoCon isn't half bad. I doubt they'd take Elon by themselves, but W&M and Richmond might be too enticing to pass up. Potential Socon North Division of Elon, Citadel, Richmond/UNCG, W&M, VMI and WCU would be fun and games against Furman and Wofford again.
At the end of the day I'd just like to be in a conference that feels well run and the CAA is not that right now. End of rant.
Go Phoenix!

They won the Sun Belt in football their second year in. Plus, JMU is a lot stronger in their other sports than App was at the time of their move up. JMU will be more than fine in either Sun Belt or CUSA.

I was a big fan of going to the CAA, and honestly, that has primarily sucked all sports considered. However, Basketball is an up and coming sport for Elon and a move for all sports to the SoCon, would be a step down for us. For basketball alone, mens and womens, we should bide our time in the CAA until a better opportunity arises, like joining Richmond and Davidson in the A10.
