With that being said if it’s between the two of them my pick is Kerns. He’s turned around two different programs in two years. That inspires hope. McGeehan appears to have improved Campbell in his tenure but at a much more gradual pace and without a conference championship. But I guess that’s why he may be looking to move.

Today from Hoopdirt
A couple new names surfacing in the search at Elon. I have heard from multiple sources that Iowa assistant Billy Taylor is involved. He has been at Iowa for the past four years, and was the head coach at D2 Belmont Abbey (NC), and Ball State before that. I have also heard from a bunch of guys that a non-D1 head coach is squarely in the mix and making noise there.

Samurai Hoops is now reporting we are hiring a sitting D3 coach… maybe Blank took my advice and hired Merkel from Randolph Macon. He seems like the obvious D3 pick considering he just won D3 coach of the year but maybe Blank has someone else in mind.

Information is that it will be Billy Taylor from Iowa. That announcement is coming in the next hour or so. The search is over. Taylor will be our new coach.

I’m confused why people seem to not like this hire. Are people expecting Coach K or Roy Williams to come back and Coach Elon? This guy is an assistant wit a Power 5 School, same as Shrage but he has numerous seasons u see his belt as a head coach at D1 schools. He has won at those school. 2 time Coach of the Year. Taken a team to the NCAA tournament. Multiple winning seasons. Has to have more recruiting connections and ties than if we hired a D2 or D3 coach with zero D1 experience. I can’t say this guy will be great but the way I see it he has a good a chance as anyone. I think most people thought Schrage was going to take us to the promise land but we just had our worst season in over 10 years with probably the best talent we have ever had. I’m willing to see what Taylor can do.

Two job moves from head coach to assistant. One winning season as head coach in the last decade. Those are my concerns. I'd prefer a D2 or D3 young, head coach, up and comer that sees Elon as a stepping stone. Somebody ruthless on his way to the top. Would rather reach the pinnacle and then lose that guy. This doesn't look like that. This looks like a safe choice that will never achieve beyond mediocre, maybe won't be terrible either.
Overall, I think Elon has more to offer on the athletic front than it often seems to realize
Obviously hope to be wrong and maybe I am.

I think most people thought Schrage was going to take us to the promise land but we just had our worst season in over 10 years with probably the best talent we have ever had. I’m willing to see what Taylor can do. Hmm let me see… 1. Track Record: In 11 years as a D-1 coach he was 165-168. He made it to the NCAA tournament once (his second year as a coach in 2004..which was 18 years ago). He finished with a winning conference record only 3 of those 11 seasons. The two years he won coach of the year were in 2003 and 2004 respectively. His Lehigh teams regressed following the 2004 season and he was fired at Ball State after going 84-99 in six years and not showing steady improvement throughout his tenure. 2. Excitement factor: None. We are hiring a retread head coach from Iowa with no connection to Elon(which is fine), is not active on social media (Schrage was actually excellent at this), is not an up and comer, and does not have a winning pedigree at comparable or lower levels. 3. Recruiting: TBD, but he doesn’t appear to have any NC connections (unless we are counting his time at UNGC 20+ years ago). He likely will not be recruiting the same regions as he did for Iowa so would expect limited overlap of AAU/high school connections. Lack of excitement factor doesn’t help his case here. 4. Reputation/Personality. Look I’ve spent 5 minutes researching so this might not be accurate but from the article regarding his firing from Ball State he seems like a taller Matt Matheny. Article essentially states: Ran a squeaky clean program, built a team performing in classroom and community. But In a world where winning and losing matters, he felt short of expectations. Good guy, not a good coach at winning games. So yeah, I’m pissed. I’m disappointed. I want Elon to succeed. I truly believe Elon has potential to be a “consistently good Mid Major” a la Belmont, Murray State, Vermont with the right hire. I truly believe a consistently good men’s basketball program will do more to improve the university’s national reputation than any building we are constructing on campus or famous speaker we pay to visit. But administration consistently has shown an indifference to winning when it comes to athletics. They care about being “squeaky clean”, promoting highest GPA among CAA teams (only thing other than Womens cross country that we win), offering chances for student athletes to “study aboard”, etc. Not that those aren’t nice and all, but I would certainly hope they or someone else realizes the objective of athletics is to win games. So yeah, I don’t this hire. I can’t say I’m surprised because my expectations were low. I wish we had an admin that cared. I wish we had a competent AD. But it is done now. I just hope Billy Taylor crushes it and makes me like a fool. Otherwise I look forward to commenting on this board again 9 years from now when we finally decide to move on from Billy Taylor after a sub-.500 record and no conference titles/NCAA tourney appearances.

I’m willing to see what Taylor can do. This: Billy Taylor - Win/Loss record at Lehigh: 81-69 meh. Ball State: 84-99...poor. At D2 Belmont Abbey: 49-42 D2 meh. Sounds like a Schrage wannabe. Mediocre, mediocre, mediocre, mediocre... did I say mediocre? And this from his Bio at Lehigh: " His calm demeanor exudes a quiet confidence that trickles down to his players, making for a relaxed, and poised group come crunch time, while his business-like approach to the game leaves no stone unturned when it comes to pre-game preparation or in-game adjustments." I want a calm demeanor like Coach K, Roy Williams, Bruce Pearl, Calipari and every other awesome coach ever. Schrage has a calm demeanor and it made me SICK!!!!!!! Give me someone with the ability to MOTIVATE. F**k a calm demeanor. Read the bio sentence again. Here are the words that stand out most to me: calm, quiet confidence, relaxed, poised, business like. OMG! REALLY!!! NOT AGAIN!!! His career, at 48 years old, has only been good as a second fiddle. I'm seriously not impressed, but because I am an Elon Die Hard, I am hopeful.

Schrage 1.5. His record doesn’t deserve a 2.0.
