The transfer portal is what got Elon a winning season this year. Got lucky landing two fifth year transfers this season at QB and RB! There will no longer be anymore 4 year starters like David Cheeks in the FCS level. If a player starts for two seasons in the FCS then they want to transfer to a FBS team. FCS teams just can't offer the NIL deals that FBS teams can. They need to continue working the Juco and High School players. You have to know how to "coach your players up", Nobody wants to do that anymore. All these coaches want to pick up a transfer student who has been in college football for at least 3 years. COACH YOUR YOUNGER PLAYERS UP!!

Defense is going to be a worry for me next season. Huge losses on that side of the ball, especially in the backfield with Jamarian Hawkins and Omar Rogers in the portal now too.

The defense will be need to be patched together and fast. One of the biggest issues for Elon is the lack of academic graduate programs. I think only one or two are available for student-athletes and I am not sure that is enticing enough.

If this portal nonsense is now the “new normal”, I would like to see Elon really embrace this brave new world and go FBS. It’s clear that FCS has been on a slow, slow death spiral for the last 7 or 8 years now. I mean, if your campus couldn’t be used as a set location for Yellowstone, you ain’t winning the Natty in FCS. And as more emphasis gets placed on the CFP, and in turn FBS as a whole, the more small time FCS looks and feels. I know jumping to FBS requires more scholarships, more attendance, and probably eventually an indoor practice facility. But it’s not impossible. I mean, have you been to a MAC game?? Or a C-USA game? Even a Georgia Southern home game? Not a lot of difference between us and them. Yes, it will take an infusion of resources, but we can swing it if there is a concerted effort to build a sustainable program. Will it happen…of course not. Sometimes I wish we had more of HPU’s “get it done” spirit. And if you say I’m just dreaming, all I would say is look at Liberty.

Sports is nothing more than an afterthought for these people. The percentage of the university money for athletics will never increase. So, it’ll never happen. Let’s be honest, we have nothing right now that says FBS. From our Athletics Admin to our facilities and funding we have nothing that doesn’t need revamping. I like the idea of recruiting high school seniors & coaching them up, but if our best players continue to come here for a year or two then transfer, we really need to change our focus toward FBS and high end FCS transfers. It’s kind of hard to argue with the success we had this year with McKay and Hampton. That is generally how JMU built its powerhouse teams when they were in FCS. Not a bad template to copy.

This is what itś comes to. First of all, I would like to thank the late great S.S. Red Wilson coach and AD for giving me the opportunity to play football at Elon over 50 years ago. I owe this opportunity to get a college edumacashun. I have supported my Alma Mater and have attended events and voiced many opinions on the forum with some degree of truth and expertise.I really like our current student/athletes and coaching staff in all sports. I want to thank the Elon staff for all the solicitations and mountains of fundraising letters and cards. The Phoenix Club has also kept in touch with the former fightń Christian alums. I also want to thank my family that has put up with many tailgates and fraternity brothers who are still alive. That being said I am entering the transfer portal. I will be looking for a school to support at a higher level. please respect my decision. (This is a load of horse manure on these Twitter portal announcements on kids leaving before they earn their degree is total disrespect for their teammates.) I just cannot support this. Iḿ out.

The only meaningful (arguably btw, as I don’t think either are major losses) ones that are not graduate transfers are DJ Moyer and Jeff yurk. All of the other contributors transferring are receiving degrees this December. The two other young guys that are leaving transferring didn’t get time anyways, so sort of irrelevant for all intents and purposes.

I understand DJ entering the portal. He got very little PT this year. I wish him well in the next phase of his college career. When Yurk was good he was very good, but when he was bad he was pretty bad. A lot of Yurk’s good was because of the gunners on the punt team. I wish him well at Pitt, but I honestly don’t think we’ll remember him next season.
I will especially miss Omar Rogers Wayne Dixie III and Tre’von Jones. I liked them and respected their character and ability.
I think our replacements on defense look very good. I’m not sure Lankford is ready for prime time just yet, but I expect him to be very good as his career progresses. And I expect that our OL will be better next year than this year even with the loss of Purcell. So more ground game in 2023 vs 2022. I think we have a lot to look forward to in 2023.
