Ironically, the Patriot League is a better athletic conference currently than the CAA (see Holy Cross football as an example). IMO, we should strive to eventually rise up to FBS. I fear FCS will be killed off by the NCAA in the next decade, and all the schools associated with an FCS conference will essentially become de facto D2 schools. Football is the overriding concern moving forward for college athletics. If you aren’t on the train, you will be scheduling Catawba and Newberry before you know it. All due respect, Patriot league is NOT a better conference than CAA.

I respectively disagree. 2-3 years ago, you would be correct. Wouldn’t even be a debate. But the CAA has added some real clunker schools recently…Hampton?…Monmouth?…A&T? (Although I do think Campbell is an up and coming school that has a made a TON of investments in sports). The PL is BY FAR a better basketball league top to bottom, and while the CAA is a better overall football conference TODAY, that gap is not as large as you might think.

Why would the Patriot League want Elon and vice versa? The Patriot League seems to have little intention of going south of DC. Elon for better or worse is kind of in its only spot that it can be in without moving up to G5 football.

Agreed. I was not (and am not) advocating a move to the PL, or any other FCS conference. I am just saying Elon should have a strategic plan for growing our athletic profile. It is clear the CAA is weakening, not strengthening. It is also clear that FCS football is not long for this world. Based on that, we need to make sure we are positioned well in the massive changes that are going to take place soon in collegiate athletics (and have already begun in some cases). Elon is staring to develop a National brand. Our athletic ambitions should mirror that. In my opinion…

I really don't understand why a school that tries to do everything well doesn't do the same for athletic achievement. It is frustrating.
