It's crazy that the team is 4-4 and still in contention for a CAA title. They are going to need to really show up against Delaware to have a shot. Richmond and Hampton feel within reach assuming Downing plays, but Delaware on the road has all the makings of a game Elon typically struggles in.
Hopefully the week off has them prepared.
Go Phoenix!

We beat the crap out of UNH coming off a bye week in 2021... But lost big to Furman last year, also coming off a bye week. So, hopefully the coaches keep the team motivated and healthy during the break.

We are a big underdog against the Hens. But we were a 37.5 point dog against JMU in 2018, and we went up to Harrisonburg and got a W. (And Cignetti got a new job)!!

We are a big underdog against the Hens. But we were a 37.5 point dog against JMU in 2018, and we went up to Harrisonburg and got a W. (And Cignetti got a new job)!! This Elon team is hard to gauge. Sometimes the defense is ferocious - W&M, Campbell, (first quarter), and Monmouth. Other times we're a kitten - GWU, NCCU. We're gonna have to be ferocious against UD. In addition, the offense will have to hit on all cylinders. We'll have to have a good passing game, which means the OL will need to do their job against UD's screwy defense to protect Downing. Plus, the receivers will absolutely need to help Downing out in getting open & being playmakers. NO DROPS or tips!! A successful passing game is the only way we'll be able to get the running game going. IMO we need to come right out of the locker room connecting on short and mid range passing rather than our usual get stopped rushing on first & second down, throw a 30 yard bomb then punt, on the first two offensive series. If we try to make this a tight game, as per usual, they'll eat us alive in the 4th quarter. This UD team is well coached, especially on defense. AND the UD crowd is among the best in the CAA. It's definitely going to be an uphill battle. I think we can do it, but it's gonna be a knock down drag out fight.

I hope it is a knock down drag out fight, and not a Phoenix meltdown. Delaware is one of those teams that expects to win, not just hopes to win. Granted, their confidence often exceeds their execution, but they're always formidable, especially at home. This year's Phoenix, as in many previous seasons, each game seems to take one quarter and sometimes two quarters off. We simply cannot do that against the Blue Hens.
epx, you nailed it re: O-line protecting the QB. Downing needs all the protection he can get, not only so he can get the pass off, but also to keep him healthy. With no effective backups, we're especially vulnerable at QB. And, as several have pointed out, we have to win out to make the play-offs. We can't win out without our #1 QB.
Go, Phoenix!
