I try to find the positive in every game but from beginning to end, I don’t think have one.
Tailgate - Thank God for the 7 AM crew. The environment was mediocre at best and with the Night of the Phoenix last night (which was pathetic this year), I expected more alumni and a more lively environment, didn’t get it. Side note: Phoenix Club needs a shake up in leadership. I don’t believe the guys leading the department do not understand Elon, the alumni, and it has been on full display. They simply do not care with the decisions being made and it’s really embarrassing.
Offense - Turnovers and just dumb decision making. Folmar is attempting to be aggressice but running a Brayboy sweep in the red zone is a silly call and we need to STOP RUNNING THE MESH/DELAY ZONE READ. It hasn’t worked in three weeks. He called it twice on second and long and each time we lost yards. He lacks feel for the game at times and it is just stupid decision making. Also, our offensive line looks great at times and pedestrian at others. Some absolutely silly mistakes from them tonight. Downing still has moments where he holds too long. Dalton has faded a bit the last three halves and they need him. Also, where is Cody Hardy in the throw game? Brayboy was rough tonight after the touchdown, red zone fumble and dropped passes.
Defense - WCU’s run game was strong tonight, primarily from missed tackles. Defense did a good job getting off the field and making big stands and was one play away from saving the offense. However, Colombo was giving Caleb Curtain hell tonight and Baker was looking rough as well. This unit fights hard but a few more errors that normal tonight.
Special Teams - What the hell was Yurk doing on the blocked field goal? It seems as he had no idea that it was a live ball and their edge rusher came through unblocked and put WCU up for good. Also, the long snapper Wilkins has had another bad snap, which costed the team points. The Special Teams units have been flawed and needs to be addressed now.
Environment - I have been an Elon fan for a while but for the first game of the season, it seemed severely underwhelming. Students showed up more than I thought but next week will be interesting regarding how many students show up.
Must win v. ETSU, which is similar to the must win vs. A&T last year. Cannot go into CAA play at 1-3. I think I’m more disappointed because I thought the win last week would catapult them into playing hard consistent football, I was wrong and I hope it gets fixed immediately.
Go Phoenix.
