Take the Davidson hoops quiz
Davidson True or False Quiz
Davidson basketball has been around for 100 years, and fans will celebrate that Saturday during Davidson's game with Chattanooga. Here are 10 questions to test how much you know about the Wildcats' yesteryear:
1. Davidson has never been on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
False. Wildcat player Mike Maloy was one of four players on the cover of a December 1968 issue, when Davidson was touted as one of four teams that could beat UCLA that season.
2. No player recruited by coach Bob McKillop has had his number retired.
True. McKillop has more than 300 wins at Davidson, but the five players who have had jerseys retired (Hobby Cobb, John Gerdy, Derek Rucker, Dick Snyder and Fred Hetzel) all played before his arrival in 1989.
3. Davidson's win against Wake Forest in Lefty Driesell's first game as coach in 1960 immediately cemented the program's resurgence.
False. Davidson won that game, but lost its next seven games, including a loss to Catawba in its next game.
"We were down 10 at halftime, and that's the only time I never went into the locker room at halftime," Driesell said. "I told myself, `I ought to quit right now."
Davidson had a winning season in his second year, and won 20 games in his third season.
4. Davidson great Dick Snyder was also a top college quarterback prospect.
True. Snyder stood 6-foot-4, and schools such as Notre Dame and Ohio State pursued him. But once Driesell crossed into the Buckeye state, Snyder decided to come to the Wildcats.
"I didn't think I was that interested in Davidson until I talked to Lefty," Snyder said. "But it worked out better than I could have imagined."
5. Davidson has never had a first-round NBA draft pick.
False. Fred Hetzel was chosen No.1 overall in the 1965 draft by the San Francisco Warriors.
6. Driesell's recruiting pitches included offering free laundry for players.
True. Davidson still provides free laundry for all its students, and Driesell said he used that to his advantage.
"A place like Duke might give a kid $15 a month for laundry," he said. "But I'd tell them they could use $100 worth every month here. Of course, they didn't realize they could've pocketed the money they got from other schools."
7. Excluding South Carolina and Tennesee, Davidson has a winning record against the other 10 SEC schools.
True. Davidson is 12-7 against the other schools all-time, including a combined 8-1 record against Georgia, Florida and Alabama.
8. Former Davidson great Mike Maloy almost became a Jehovah's Witness instead of coming to the school.
True. According to Driesell, Maloy hadn't taken the SAT before he saw him in New York, because he had already made up his mind. But once he scored 1,400, Driesell wouldn't let him get away.
"He was one of the most consistent players I ever coached," Driesell said. "I was real glad to have him."
9. Hetzel was Davidson's first All-American in 1963.
False. Hetzel was an All-American that year, but George Cheek was the first Wildcat to get the honor in 1949.
10. Driesell's teams were easier to recruit because Davidson did not have stringent academic requirements, as it does now.
False. Players have been required to meet the school's academic standards, and those standards have always been more difficult than most schools.
"Davidson basketball is a pretty unique program," said Gerdy, who graduated in 1979. "You truly are a student first. You can't be a great athlete without being a great student. That is what we are celebrating Saturday." --
