Okay,
So I saw a quote from the SoCon commish where he said the Davidson streak in the tourney is bigger than the App win versus Michigan.
I decided to stroll over to the App board and read their comments about the quote. It seems they think the 1 win over Michigan at the Big House is the biggest thing to EVER happen to the conference.
Personally, I think what Davidson in the tourney is THE BIGGEST to happen to a conference team. Yes, an FCS went into the Big House and beat an overrated Michigan, but look at what Davidson is doing.
1. 20-0 in the conference 2. Wins over Gonzaga and Georgetown 3. A win over a STRONG Wisc. team playing their best ball of the season 4. They are playing for a Final 4 appearance! Not bad for a team out of the 20th ranked conference.
Apps win was big, but it was a single event, and a fluke. Davidson's streak is a series from a team that has proven all year they can take on the big boys. The early tough schedule has seriously paid off.
Thoughts?

If Davidson makes it to the final 4 then I think it is as big as the app win. Personally I think Iamarino (sp) is a bonehead for making that statement!

Agreed...I have no idea why he would even make that comment. Both are huge and great for the conference so I don't even compare the two. Go Phoenix!

Which will people from outside the SoCon remember more in 5 years?
App over Michigan, no doubt.
Davidson's run was great (and I was pulling hard for them tonight), but especially with George Mason's recent run to the Final Four, it isn't the same.

IMO it's two huge feathers in the Scocon Bonnett. can anyone add any other Conference all time highlights? 6 NC's for GaSU is one, our win At Clemson BB 2005?

These may be the biggest in RECENT years (in no particular order):
1. Davidson's Run 2. App win @ Michigan 3. GSU appearances in the CWS 4. El Cid's appearaacnes in the CWS 5. Elon's win over Clemson breaking the SoCon's 37 game losing streak versus ACC schools 6. Wofford's win over Purdue in men's basketball; 2007-2008 season 7. App's 3 straight national titles 8. Any win over a I-A/FBS team (none come to mind other than App's win, though I think Furman beat Wyoming 4 years ago) 9. GSU's 6 national titles, though I think only 2 have come as a SoCon member 10. The past 3 seasons (including this one) the SoCon has been a top 10 conference in the baseball RPI 11.I would also note that App's win over Arkansas in men's basketball this season was pretty significant.
That's what I can think of off the top of my head. My SoCon knowledge is fairly limited.

In men's hoops there have been a number of wins over big name teams. Wofford over Tennessee, Davidson over Missouri, UNCG over Ga Tech. CofC went to a super regional two years ago in baseball. I seem to recall UNCG going pretty far in the NCAA soccer tournament a couple of years back, but I'm not sure. All in all though the Davidson run and App win over Michigan are by far the biggest.
The CWS appearances are awesome, but they happened at a time when it didn't get much visibility so it slips under the radar. With the CWS coverage these days a SoCon team making it would be a pretty big deal, but prob still not as much as App and Davidson.
Go Phoenix!

It's the baseball equivalent of Davidson competing in the Elite 8. Those appearances were some time ago......the early 90's I think???

elonpride:
I remember Valpo (especially since I'm from Indiana), but people remember that more because of the signature moment (Bryce Drew's buzzer beater) than how far they went in that tournament (that was a first-round game, then they won one more before losing in the Sweet Sixteen). Curry has been lights out, but there hasn't been a signature moment from their run. If they would have run a better play to end the Kansas game and would have tied or won it at the buzzer, maybe. But unfortunately it didn't happen, so the App blocked kick remains the top SoCon signature moment and achievement.

THEY HAD A SERIES OF SIGNATURE MOMENTS!!!!When folks talked about sports over the past week, what was the ONLY thing you heard them talking about? Stephen Curry.......

So on the CBS montage before the tournament every year, which Stephen Curry moment will be shown alongside Laettner's turnaround jumper to beat Kentucky, Bryce Drew's 3 to beat Missouri, Keith Smart's baseline jumper to win the championship for IU over Syracuse, etc.?

Oh that's simple......it will be a closeup of him beating his chest and pointing to the sky!!!! Stephen Curry is now a house hold name and that's a pretty powerful clip. Sorry, I'm a creative services director and promotion manager for a CBS affiliate!!! ;D

Don't forget Valvano running around like crazy... To give my two cents, Davidson's run is pretty big, but I think App's win over Michigan is bigger.
