Lembo Announces 2007 Phoenix Football Captains
5/24/2007
ELON, N.C. – Elon head football coach Pete Lembo has announced that four rising seniors – offensive lineman Charlie Porterfield (Jonesville, Va./Lee), cornerback Irvin Raglin (College Park, Ga./Creekside), free safety Chris Bland (Shallotte, N.C./West Brunswick) and running back T.J. Clegg (Graham, N.C./Southern Alamance) – have been selected by their peers as Phoenix team captains for the upcoming campaign.
“At our final team meeting this month, I asked our returning players to vote for their captains,” Lembo said. “Our overall team leadership has improved and I felt comfortable that quality candidates had emerged by the end of the semester. I am confident that these veterans are up to the challenge and can handle the responsibility beginning immediately. They will get some help from a number of other good leaders in the program.”
En route to fashioning the program’s most successful season in six years in 2006, the Phoenix led the Southern Conference and ranked 13th in the country in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision in passing offense with 246.1 yards per game. Elon also topped the SoCon and finished in a tie for sixth in the nation with 17 total interceptions.
“Charlie has battled through adversity and has emerged as a strong leader for us,” Lembo said. “He is very mature, sees the big picture and has an excellent work ethic. Irv and Chris are our only senior starters on defense, so they must anchor a very young unit. I am confident that they will continue to work hard and step up to the challenge. T.J. has an incredible attitude and a motor that never stops running. His passion and ability to overcome adversity have made him an excellent role model for younger players."
Porterfield, Raglin, Bland and Clegg will lead the Phoenix into the 85th Elon football season this fall. The Phoenix will open the 2007 campaign on an historic note with the program’s first-ever contest versus a Football Bowl Subdivision team at South Florida on Sept. 1.
