Lembo Names Browne Assistant Football Coach
6/25/2007
ELON, N.C. – Elon University head football coach Pete Lembo announced today the hiring of assistant coach Scott Browne, who served Charleston Southern University as its running back coach the past two years. He replaces Louis Clyburn as the Phoenix’s recruiting coordinator and running back coach.
Clyburn, who has accepted the assistant director of athletics for ticket operations and event management position at Elon, served the Phoenix as recruiting coordinator the past two seasons. He coached the offensive line in 2005 and the running backs in 2006.
“Louis is an excellent coach who has been very loyal, trustworthy and hard working,” Lembo said. “He was a real asset during our staff's transition to Elon and in our recruiting efforts. These same qualities will make him a valuable addition to (Director of Athletics) Dave Blank's administrative team. Louis has made a big investment in our football program and I am sure he will continue to be a good resource for us.”
Before coming to Elon in 2005, Clyburn served as an assistant football coach at Appalachian State University for four seasons (1995-98), Duke University for five seasons (1999-2003) and Lenoir-Rhyne College for one season (2004).
The 1994 Duke graduate earned a bachelor’s degree in history and political science while collecting four varsity letters as an offensive lineman for the Blue Devils. He helped Duke to an 8-4 campaign his senior year, concluding his playing career with a trip to the Hall of Fame Bowl.
Prior to coming to Charleston Southern in 2005, Browne served as a defensive and offensive graduate assistant football coach at the University of South Carolina for the 2004 campaign. The Jacksonville, Fla., native worked as an assistant football coach at University Christian School in his hometown during the 2003 season.
“Scott is very excited to join our coaching staff and knows he has a big challenge ahead of him,” Lembo said. “He possesses an excellent work ethic, a high energy level and a sincere approach. Scott has learned from some reputable coaches and has a good foundation in place as a position coach and recruiter. He should be a good fit on our staff and we will get him up to speed quickly.”
During Browne’s time at Charleston Southern, the Buccaneers finished 7-4 and snagged a share of the Big South Conference championship in 2005 before going 9-2 and appearing in The Sports Network national top-25 poll in 2006.
Browne was a four-year letterman at South Carolina as an offensive lineman, graduating in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in retail management. He helped the Gamecocks to an Outback Bowl championship and landed on the 1999-2000 Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll.
