Seemed like a lot of students attended...lacking in the community support. Not sure why, all the local ACC teams were away (with the exception of Wake, but they're game was over by 3:30pm). I'd like to see a bigger crowd against Liberty with the anticipation of the huge crowd against App.

Elon explodes to easy win Adam Smith / Times-News September 9, 2007 12:10 AM
ELON ¡X From the vicious hits delivered by Walker White and Brandon Ward to Scott Riddle¡¦s passing clip that neared a school record, Elon University loaded up and unleashed Saturday night.
Division II West Virginia Wesleyan became the battered recipient as the Phoenix frolicked 59-16 in its football home opener at Rhodes Stadium.
A 42-point surge in the second half, touched off by a four-touchdown burst during the third quarter, allowed Elon to tidy up after a first half that coach Pete Lembo described as sloppy.
¡§In the first half we were just hurting ourself,¡¨ Elon receiver Michael Mayers said. ¡§We were our own worst enemy. ... Special teams lifted us up and the offense tried to keep it moving.¡¨
Riddle, a freshman out of Eastern Randolph High School, finished with 362 passing yards, 26 shy of the school¡¦s single-game record.
He spread his three touchdown throws among Terrell Hudgins, Sean Jeffcoat and Mayers as Elon amassed its highest point total since October 1998, the season before it moved up to the classification formerly known as Division I-AA.
¡§Probably a C,¡¨ Riddle said, offering a grade of his performance. ¡§I¡¦d say 362 yards against South Florida¡¦s defense, Appalachian¡¦s defense, that would be an A.¡¨
Nine first-half penalties were assessed against Elon (1-1). When West Virginia Wesleyan tailback Greg Duncan connected with an utterly open Alex Puente on a 60-yard touchdown strike, the Bobcats (1-1) trailed 24-13.
The Phoenix responded with a wave of 28 unanswered points in 14 minutes. It was a spree that started on Jeffcoat¡¦s 9-yard catch ¡X the first collegiate score for the freshman ¡X and ended on backup Donny Kirby¡¦s first completion as an Elon quarterback, a 39-yard touchdown to Johnie Blackwell.
In between, Bo Williamson snaked through, blocked a punt and fell on the bouncing ball in the end zone. That gave way to Karlos Sullivan¡¦s knifing 80-yard punt return for a touchdown Williamson re-emerged with a vengeance after a violation of team policy removed him from last weekend¡¦s trip to South Florida. He caught three passes for 62 yards and deflected another punt in the second quarter, noting that assistant coach Shane Burnham outlined where the special teams openings would be.
¡§Somehow it just kept happening that way,¡¨ said Williamson, who¡¦s out of Cummings High School. ¡§I just kept coming free.¡¨
Elon¡¦s 551 total yards more than doubled West Virginia Wesleyan¡¦s output. And the swarming Phoenix defense generally made the going bruising ¡X the Bobcats completed just 7 of 23 passes and averaged 1.8 yards on 44 rushing attempts.
White, a safety, administered a collection of punishing tackles and separated two Bobcats from their helmets. Ward, a defensive end, knocked West Virginia Wesleyan quarterback Harry Lorusso from the game with a third-quarter collision.
¡§We were trying to hurt him and get him out of the game. That¡¦s our goal every game,¡¨ Elon defensive tackle David Hunt said. ¡§The second half we stepped it up a lot.¡¨
Elon redshirt freshman Brandon Newsome and true freshman A.J. Harris ran for their first touchdowns in college.
Hudgins (eight catches, 142 yards) appeared headed for a monster performance before leg cramps limited him to two receptions in the second half. Mayers chipped in seven catches for 90 yards.
¡§I didn¡¦t think we were worn out,¡¨ West Virginia Wesleyan coach Bill Struble said. ¡§It wasn¡¦t that we were falling to the wayside. I just think we missed tackles. We just whiffed.¡¨
ƒÞ EXTRA POINTS ...: Elon tailback T.J. Clegg and nose tackle Robert McGruder were carted off in the first half with right leg injuries. Lembo said both, who returned to the sideline on crutches with their legs immobilized, were preliminarily diagnosed with knee sprains. ... Lembo, in his second year at Elon and two games into his seventh season as a head coach, picked up his 50th career victory. He went 44-14 at Lehigh from 2001-2005.

I know of several people who "boycotted" the game because it was a D2 opponent. Hopefully the crowd will be even bigger vs. Liberty.

I don't particularly like reading the team "tries" to hurt opponent's QB...it's a game, not war...I would prefer the mindset be that we outplay...not out injure.

I don't think they mean "out to injur" versus, "hit hard and make him scared as hell"

EP, hope your interpretation is right, as I read it more that it's their mission to hurt and get him out of the game. The hit which did in fact knock their QB out of the game was loud - either it occurred right at a microphone or it was an unbelievably hard hit. There were actually several hits in the game where I kind of thought we went a bit overboard - not suggesting I want us to miss tackles, but I don't think you need to try to hit hard enough to hurt/injury opponent.

When you're on the field, you don't think whether or not you're going to hit somebody too hard or not, you just go out and play with everything you've got. Thats what got these kids to this point in football.
