Western Carolina is picked to repeat as regular-season champion in Southern
Conference baseball.
The Catamounts were selected as the preseason favorite in separate polls involving
media and the conference’s coaches.
Western Carolina received seven first-place votes from coaches, who couldn’t vote
for their own teams. The Citadel received the other three first-place votes.
Western Carolina nabbed 13 of 18 first-place votes from media.
Western Carolina returns seven position starters and two starting pitchers from last
season’s team. The roster includes Southern Conference Preseason Player of the
Year Aaron Attaway and Preseason Pitcher of the Year Jeremy Null. Attaway is a
shortstop.
The Citadel was picked second in both polls.
The coaches’ poll showed Appalachian State third, Elon fourth and Georgia Southern
fifth, followed by Furman, Samford, UNC Greensboro, Wofford and Davidson.
The media tabbed Georgia Southern third, followed by Elon, Appalachian State,
Samford, Furman, UNCG, Davidson and Wofford. Citadel and Georgia Southern each
received two first-place votes from media, while Elon, which won the 2013
conference tournament, had one top vote.
Elon second baseman Sebastian Gomez was a first-team preseason all-conference
selection as determined by coaches. UNCG outfielder Eric Kalbfleisch also made the
first-team list. Elon and UNCG were without players on the preseason second team.
Elon is scheduled to open the season Friday with the start of a three-game home
series against Cincinnati.
