www.timesonline.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=18182838&BRD=2305&PAG=461&dept_id=478568&rfi=6Ryan Hulme had many reasons to accept a baseball scholarship from Elon University, but the biggest one, perhaps, was right outside his window. "I really wanted to get out of the cold weather," said Hulme, a senior pitcher on the Center High School baseball team. Hulme, the first area player from the Class of 2007 to accept a NCAA Division I baseball scholarship, felt the Elon, N.C., campus would be the perfect fit. Hulme, who has a fastball approaching 90 mph, has actually been on Elon's radar for more than a year. In the summer after his sophomore season, Hulme went to a WPIAL showcase with teammate Ryan Thomas, now pitching at Temple. After clocking 86 mph at the showcase, Elon invited Hulme to their junior day. Hulme also had his eyes opened that day after he and Thomas were approached by some major league scouts.
