Calling all Alumni. I have a challenge for the Alumni. I wonder if we can raise enough money however long it takes, maybe three for a artificial field turf football practice field to replace one of the grass fields. One reason is Elon does play on artificial field turf. I think JMU, William & Mary, Richmond and a few I missed stadiums have field turf installed. This would increase their competitiveness and also increase practice time as they could practice after a rain storm. Again I hope the Alumni are up to the challenge.

I'm wondering what your point is. Our stadium is as good as any. I do agree we need a turf field. However, all funds are being directed to the new basketball arena. Which we don't need.

I'm wondering what your point is. Our stadium is as good as any. I do agree we need a turf field. However, all funds are being directed to the new basketball arena. Which we don't need. Our stadium is probably middle of the road at this point. JMU, Richmond, W&M are probably better. Towson and Stony Brook could be better. Albany is a couple years old. The issue is other schools stadiums were worse but are putting serious cash to update and make their stadium better than ours. While we won't do a whole lot. Adding a video board is something every one already had. New Hampshire just added one and it is 25% bigger than our new one. While a lot of these stadiums don't have the bowl look like ours does which obviously makes it look better. Take a look at W&M football only building too very nice. The new gym is much needed. As the gym is old, out dated and not really usable for things like graduation, events speeches etc. add on top of that is the fact that Elon is running out of office space for sports and administration. Coaches have to share offices in Alumni Fieldhouse and the gym right now. This should at least help a little bit I hope. Adding turf urn is obviously something needed for practice so for a lot of people it is something they will never see. The track should have been turf so teams like lacrosse could have played and practiced On it and not destroy the football field or soccer field. Every team but I think RHode Island and us have turf so really practicing on it makes sense.

Is there a chance that Elon isn't investing in an artificial turf practice field because they have plans to convert Rhodes Stadium to artificial turf in the near future? That would make more sense to me than paying for an artificial turf practice field. I like the natural playing surface, but Elon is all about sustainability and green initiatives - it would make a lot of sense for them to make the switch.

If my memory serves me correctly I vaguely remember discussion of updating the field turf. If this is the case I would agree that this would be the best step. Either that or placing it on the soccer field and converting to a soccer Lax

From what I know. A turf field at Rhodes is very much in play.

first things first, Main point our grass is always in great shape and with the drainage system is a Top Level facility. If they go to turf I see several other sports using it but that ruins the aesthetic look of a logo and additional lines thank God We don't have a track around the place. I should be on the sidelines Saturday and give an evaluation. It will be interesting to see who shows up for the game. I pray for good school spirit. Bring back the 70's atmosphere.

OK so I will agree the grass is great however, how much is the cost/overhead. and dont tell me low as its pretty much the same as a golf course. overseed, sand to top dress the field, and level it. Lawnmower maintenance, Gas, ok bad thing someone is going to lose their job to maintain the field but they can transition to maintaining the artificial turf field and the other grass fields. Watering the field cost. this is a yearly overhead cost. However maybe the athletic department does not pay the cost. Im not saying make it multi sport however you can play or practice on a artificial turf field. If it is multisport thats not so bad then start raising money on two large indoor practice facilities. Divert that money to the players. Build another athletic building to house offices. Who knows but having a field you can play on year round rain or shine and not have to repair until say every 10 to 15 years....at least turf the high traffic areas like D1 schools have done, Sideline and behind endzones. Also maybe it will lower the equipment staffs bill for cleaner lol....

A lot of mowing, seeding and watering can be done for the $300,000 cost of a new turf. The only reason turf makes sense is for multistory use.
