Well, that stunk. Kudos to their kicker for making that long one. This stings. We had our chances.
Offense: D
I’ve been watching Elon football for 30 years and that was the worst OL play I can remember. Outside of a couple drives, it was really tough to watch. Cheek needs time. Every time he did have time he was sharp. We had two chances after getting stops in the 4Q and we went backwards. Taking those sacks on the last drive doomed us.
Defense: B For having to be on the field way too much, we held our own. We flew to the ball and our effort was great. We still need to cover better as there was some soft coverage throughout.
Special Teams: C- The block was great. Then the fumble killed us. A&T cashed in quickly.
Coaching: Overall, the kids played hard but there were stretches of some flat play. It seemed we made some adjustments on O for a bit in the second half. However, we had some really suspect play calls. We could not solve their DL and we rarely kept the TE and RB back to protect and it showed. A&T dominated us in the trenches with zero blitz. Troubling.
Overall: C-
This was a winnable game. We must regroup and get better up front on O. If not, it could be a long year. Let’s come out and whip the Citadel.

Areas I saw as a group I will grade on a curve that needs addressing Special Teams: punt and kickoff coverage C- did give up a TD but We needed better coverage even with penalties We drew on their crack backs. Field Goal blocks could have given a better effort on the last play to lay out to make that block, just say'n. OL D+ run blocking must make holes for RB's run through OL C- Pass Blocking better than I thought QB needs to get rid or throw it away. Can improve both. RB's D- Would be an F but Cyphers ran better and McNear did have 2 Redzone TD's . need to make more from less make a cut and go like Hades. Defense L rushing D C- on first half B- in second half. A&T was physical out ranked us as home team w/ a full house and We had it tied to OT. 4th Q grades out an F

I am a diehard AGGIE FOOTBALL FAN But I also love the game of football And Saturday night was one of the best games I seen in years. I all ways respect your football team and now I have respect for your fans. We say AGGIE PRIDE but Saturday night your football team and your fans showed ELON PRIDE. Elon is a great great football program and the type of team we needed to play to face Duke this Saturday. Not saying that A&T or Elon is on the same level as a ACC team but we will not play a team that played as hard as Elon did Saturday. Best of luck to your football team this season and I will be pulling for team all season Just wanted to stop in and show some love. Now on to Duke AGGIE PRIDE

We scored 21 points. 2016 we averaged 12. 2015 was 12.5 and 2014 was 13 points. Not sure I get some of the commentary on this fan board.
Frankly the play calling was crap. Our receivers were open all night and we were adamant to run the ball.
Offense was about what I expected. Defense under performed expectations. Not great on the run game and got beat on virtually every lead slant pass play.
Good news is they fought until the very end. This year is going to require some patience along with a reality check.

I tend to agree with you, we did score 21 points against one of the best defenses in the country last year. We also have up 21 points in average last season, so we are right on par with our average. It's just that the offense wasn't. We averaged 24 points on offense last season and we didn't have Davis Cheek or Malcolm Summers for half the year. We have to expect more. The play calling was horrible. It was so obvious that short passes were working. Why would you run the ball up the gut 2 out of 3 times? We had 0.6 YARDS PER CARRY on Saturday. Stop thinking of us as a run team and think of us as balanced, throwing the ball at least 30-35 times a game. Montana threw 52 times on Saturday and was electric. We can be that way too.

A few more stats:
We allowed FIVE sacks for 40 lost yards, and only picked up 1 sack for 7 yards. For comparison, Towson only had 2 sacks on Saturday against the Citadel, and they had 36 passing attempts, not 27. We basically got sacked every 5th passing play for lots of negative yardage. Towson got sacked every 16th play. Is Towson's OLine really that much better than ours?
We had 33 rushing attempts for 0.6 YPC. A&T had 41 attempts for 3.2 YPC. 3.2 YPC is pretty average, and they only got 133 total rushing yds so our run defense wasn't THAT bad, but it wasn't good either. Getting 3.33 YPC means you get a first down every time you run the ball for 3 downs. That can't happen against teams like JMU who will want to run the ball down your throat.
We had 5 penalties for 39 lost yds on Saturday. Now, granted, A&T had 11 penalties for 91 yds lost. But our average last year was the best in the country at 3.42 penalties per game. We can't continue to have games with 5 or more penalties and expect to be one of the best in the country.

One of those penalties also wiped out a long Elon TD run. I told you guys, this wasn’t a good matchup.

We scored shortly after that long TD run.
My view the tipped punt that we touched a 2nd time at midfield for a turnover was a massive turning point.

Agreed. Elon had the momentum at that moment and lost it when A&T recovered that punt. Poor execution on our part. Our team has to be ready to play a blocked punt and have that awareness to get to the ball quicker.

I don’t quite understand all of the negativity around this game. This was a quality A&T opponent that held a higher national ranking and is light years better than the A&T program we played in 2006. We had our chances and it’s disappointing we couldn’t pull it out but we lost on a fg as time expired.
I walked away with a lot of positives to take from this game. First and foremost our line, which is our biggest question mark, improved greatly as the game went on. The struggles we did have are completely fixable as the staff and players work out the kinks. Lastly, historically we were 4-7 against them heading in to the game. I was very worried we could walk away having suffered a greater loss knowing the talent A&T has and the fact it was this staffs first game together. The D should continue to get tougher, the O line should continue to mesh and the points will come. Love our chances as we make our way through the CAA schedule and no reason this team can’t be a competitor in the playoffs by the end of the year.
Just my two cents. An entire season is still ahead of us.
