A.P. (Spartanburg SC) 13:10 In a shocking news announcement today Southern Conference Commissioner John Iamarino announced a re-alignment of the teams for men's basketball play. Starting this upcoming season there will still be two divisions, but the teams in each division will change and the names of the divisions will also. Making up the new "Saviors Division" will be Davidson and College of Charleston. The rest of the SoCon teams will make up the other division known as "Everybody But Davidson and College of Charleston Division". Teams in the Savior Division will play each other 18 times this upcoming season with the regular season champion getting an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. The loser of that division will get an automatic bid into the NIT tournament if they do not recieve an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament.
Teams in the "Everybody But Davidson and College of Charleston Division" will play each other an undeterminate amount of times as it really doesn't matter how many times they play as none of them have a chance at winning the Southern Conference and advancing to post season according to conference officials.
The Commissioner replied when asked what prompted the change "It is obvious to any fan, even the casual fan, that Davidson and College of Charleston are clearly the dominant powerhouses in the conference and as Commissioner it is my job to emphasize the strengths of our conference. If at any time in the future any of the other teams show any inclination to actually becoming a decent team consideration will be given to moving them into the division with Davidson and College of Charleston." Further he added "In particular I want to thank College of Charleston and their deep pockets for repeatedly saving the SoCon's existance. In their honor we have named the upper division, the Savior's Division."
Coaches at the schools were not available for immediate comment.
