It was great to see another CAA player in Riller getting picked this week. I will certainly be heading to Greensboro to see him play. It begs the question... When will Elon get their first draft pick in program history?
I could see Hunter Woods being a top 50 player after 2 more years of development in a current day NBA where wings are so highly valued.
Whats going to happen with Elon bigs now that we have big man whisperer Coach Adams established? He was seen on Twitter last year with Brook Lopez working out in the Schar and is known to have revolutionized Carlos Boozer's game. I think Adams arrival is a few years too late unfortunately. Karolis Kundratus was a guy who was brutally underdeveloped under the Matheny staff. It would have been intriguing to see what Adams could have done with Kundratus. Maybe a late second rounder or a UDFA?

Some CAA programs have made a killing off the international route, and reflecting back, it’s really where MM found his sweet spot in the recruiting pipeline. Wonder what effort the current staff put into maintaining those contacts over there? Hopefully they did their due diligence to keep the communication strong. I do think we have slightly improved our athleticism since Schrage took the reigns, however it remains to be seen if that translates into improved defense. The talent MM brought in across the pond flashed highly refined offensive games from day 1, thanks to lining up against pros for years. I have my doubts this year’s group of freshman will flash the same level of immediate impact and offensive maturity we became accustomed to under Matt. Can’t wait to find out and see with our own eyes in the coming weeks! Rise Phoenix! Class of ‘82

Sorry to be so harsh, but MM’s recruiting overseas got us nothing. Nothing. It was lazy recruiting. It’s just facts.
Our current staff has blown the doors off of the previous staff’s in the level of player we are bringing in. It’s not even close. Not to mention the development aspect of the growth we saw last year.

I hope the potential is there. I’m just worried we are relying on skill development, rather than bringing guys in who have necessary skill set and fundamentals on day 1. Matt clearly knew how to identify freshmen who were ready to compete for major minutes right out the gate. Not sure we can say the same about this entire freshman class? Rise Phoenix! Class of ‘82

Alright Topher99, help me understand how a 10th rounder in 1969 and a second rounder in 1965 are relevant to this conversation. That would be like me walking into Oak House and Phil saying he has two new beers on tap then pours me a Miller Lite and Busch Lite. It doesn't count. They aren't craft beers. The NBA in 2020 is different than the NBA in the 60's.
As far as the foreign pipeline in the CAA, I just think of Gustys playing for UNCW a few years ago and getting Coach Keets and crew over the hump. He is arguably the best big in CAA history and is a big reason UNCW was able to hang with Duke in the tourney

Didn’t say it compared. Just correcting a factual error. Alright Topher99, help me understand how a 10th rounder in 1969 and a second rounder in 1965 are relevant to this conversation. I do agree he was very good, but I think David Robinson would be the best big man in CAA history. Go Phoenix!

phoenixphonatic and phoenixlifer I can't take either of you seriously. Kundrotas as a potential second rounder in the NBA?? You gotta be high my guy. You obviously didn't watch Elon basketball under the Matheny era. Also, the reason Matheny's players so called "excelled" in their first years was because all of his players regressed over their next 3 years (Point A,B,C,D: Kundrotas, Swoope, Hairston are just some examples). Also, how can you judge these freshman before we've even seen a game. Look at last years freshman group are you just going to ignore the fact that they won more CAA tournament games than Matheny's final 5 years combined?? Cmon guys if you want low level basketball and to relive the Matheny days then you can take your fandom down the road to Tubby at High Point. I'm more than happy to place any bets on this team finishing higher than 4th in the CAA and possibly challenging for the regular season title. All I gotta say is thank goodness I've got some competency with fc4life on this board.

Overseas recruiting is pretty much a dry hole for a CAA-level program. There was a time in the early 2000s when it could be productive, but now that a lot of the P5 schools are actively recruiting overseas as well, there's just not enough talent there.
Also, the recruiting under Schrage is more than just a small improvement. Really looking forward to seeing this year's team. We've finally got the talent to compete in the CAA, if they can put it all together and stay healthy.

We've finally got the talent to compete in the CAA, if they can put it all together and stay healthy. We have the most efficient foreign big man in the CAA now. If Federico got as many shots as your boy Butler, he would have scored 30+ points. Will Butler have the Melo effect on this team? Also does anybody see CJ McCollum in Darius Burford? Maybe a little Kellan Grady too? Elite level athlete that has enough moxy and skill to just takeover games regardless of what level he plays at. 7 points in debut. 3/4 from the field and no turnovers. Give the kid 3-4 years and look for his name on draft night?
