Phoenix to Play Six Games Vs. 2007 NCAA Tourney Teams
8/8/2007
ELON, N.C. -- Elon University Athletics and head men’s basketball coach Ernie Nestor today announced the slate of games the Phoenix will face in the upcoming 2007-08 season which includes six games against 2007 NCAA Tournament participants. Nestor’s squad will face two Atlantic Coast Conference foes and one opponent from the Southeastern Conference as part of the nine-game non-conference schedule. Southern Conference squads will play 20 league games this year.
Elon will host two exhibition contests prior to the start of the regular season. On Tuesday, October 30 at 7:00 p.m., the Phoenix will take on Belmont Abbey. The second exhibition will be held on Monday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m. against North Carolina Wesleyan. Both exhibitions will be held in the “Nest.”
The regular season will begin on Friday, November 9 when the Phoenix travels to Virginia Tech, the first of the games against last year’s tournament foes. The first home date will come four days later when Erskine visits the “Nest” in a 7:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, November 13. The second home game will feature Georgia State who visits Elon after the Phoenix played in Atlanta, Ga. in a BracketBuster game a year ago.
Tusculum and a home BracketBuster opponent to be announced later will round out the home non-conference portion of the slate.
The Phoenix will make non-league appearances at Georgia, Virginia Commonwealth, Penn and Virginia. All but Georgia of those four were NCAA Tournament entrants last season while the Bulldogs appeared in the NIT showcase.
The SoCon schedule will tip-off for Elon on Tuesday, November 27 when Elon hosts Western Carolina at 7:00 p.m. The first road SoCon tilt for the Phoenix will come on Tuesday, December 18 at Chattanooga.
Nestor, in his fifth season at the helm of the Elon program, said, “I feel that we have put together a schedule which will challenge our young men. With the expansion of the conference schedule to 20 games, we will begin playing league games even earlier this year. We have to prepare for those games with our challenging non-conference schedule.”
