I did get a laugh at how we're building excuses in to the headlines now. As if us being short-handed was the biggest problem. elonphoenix.com/news/2023/1/4/mens-basketball-short-handed-phoenix-falls-to-uncw.aspxOn a side note, Erskine still has yet to win a game this season and J&W has only won against two schools I've heard of (Methodist & Brevard). So even the non-D1 wins are about as low quality as possible. We're 360 out of 363 in the RPI and 1 of 5 teams still without a D1 win. (LIU, FAMU, Delaware State and UAPB). The only bright spot is we've actually been more competitive recently than I would have expected, but at the end of the day more losses. Go Phoenix!

This morning I was not surprised to see that no one was commenting. Of all the huge mistakes Blank has made, and that includes those of omission, this hire may be the biggest. This is not a college basketball team by any stretch of the imagination. Hell it would not even be a great high school team. There are zero players (with the possible exception of McKinnon, that could play on another CAA team. Nothing is going to change before March. We the fans and contributors that will just have to suffer thorough it. At least William and Mary got rid of Hugy (sp.) rather quickly and is on the road to recovery. I was never a huge contributor but, I have given on multiple fronts to athletics for more than 55 years in succession and have been a season ticket holder in football and basketball even though I have only seen one game in Scharr. I will not give one more penny to Elon Athletics as long as Blank is there and I feel about the same about Book. The administration is not doing anything to promote or to provide outstanding services to athletics. Athletics contributes greatly to the student experiences and to school spirit which is sorely missing at Elon. We are a National university with a national reputation, except for athletics. And where do you get most of your publicity?

Well with regards to the game it went about basically as I expected. UNCW is a solid team, they and CofC have the 2nd and 1st longest active winning streaks, respectively, in the country right now.
Zac and Sean hit some tough shots early that kept it close but we really never attacked UNCW with good ball movement on the offensive end. There’s still way too much dribbling going on. Our offensive fundamentals look bad, I feel like a couple guys have even regressed. I mean we travel, step out of bounds, leave our feet for wild unnecessary passes, etc. There were some time when we moved the ball well and got some good looks from the outside. We missed a lot of them, especially late in the first half and early 2nd half. We didn’t get enough inside touches and credit UNCW for some of that, but also we are having a lot of possessions where we are settling for bad shots without ever getting the ball inside once.
I still think the zone defense is a major work in progress. Half the guys look lost out there on defense. I don’t think they have really had enough time to learn and practice matchup zone principles. The basics of rotating and communicating are lacking. We don’t pressure the ball at the top of the key enough, leading to easy entry passes into the zone. Lord knows we don’t find a man to box out when the ball goes up. We let passes literally cut through the zone. I’m not saying these things are easy to improve or learn by any measure but we really struggle with a lot of them right now. Taylor is in it for the long haul and zone is something you have to practice and develop feel/chemistry for so I guess some patience is warranted.
Realistically the bottom half of the CAA is terrible. And we’ve yet to play a team from the bottom half. So there are still some wins on the table possibly. Does anybody know what Max’s timeline is?

I was going to try and refrain from commenting on this, but I can't.
1) All of this outrage is insane considering that we all saw this coming. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US on this board knew that this season would be rough. However, if you watched this team play the last three games and you are telling me that they are not truly putting their best foot forward, you solely want to be negative about everything.
2) Some of you claim to be fans and love Elon, but its questionable. Yes, this is directly to everelon who has been ripping everything about Elon this year in Football and Basketball. If you don't believe me, look at his football posts. Rips the team when they go up and lose to New Hampshire & Rhode Island, but his only post in the last few weeks of the season is that we need to "loose the white helmets and pants". However, reemerges when we lose the playoff game. The fake outrage is exhausting and if the negative results are the only thing that light your fire then you are the problem.
3) I do not agree with a lot of what everelon says, but I am hand-in-hand with him when it comes to Blank. He has to retire. At the UNCW game, he was sitting at the broadcast table, not meeting alumni, not talking to students, not even talking to his staff. He thinks he is bigger than what he is and I firmly believe that the athletic department will be much better when he decides to step down. However, I want it to be known that in no way, will he be fired. That is not how it works at this level.
4) I am admittedly a glass half full type of person, but I knew coming in that this would be a tough, tough season. I mean just look at the end of our bench during the UNCW game, MacKinnon (out), Junkin (out), Smart (out), Gillens-Butler (still working himself back), Noord (out), Watson (just got back from injury), Michael (playing through injury). I think Billy has coached well with what he has to work with. I refuse to ask him to be fired after one season considering how he inherited the position.
At the end of the day, I want there to be a high expectation for Elon athletics, but we need to be realistic that some things are going to take time. Sorry.

Realistically the bottom half of the CAA is terrible. And we’ve yet to play a team from the bottom half. So there are still some wins on the table possibly. Does anybody know what Max’s timeline is?We simply do not have anyone with the athletic ability, size and skill to drive inside effectively. Sean does this regularly, but most of the time he gets stuffed or misses the shot. He was better against UNCW, made some shots inside and even got an and 1, but he still has a very long way to go to play that game at this level. Zac also tries and has some success, but it's a struggle for him to get to the basket with defenders hanging all over him. I give him a AA+ for effort though. No one works harder than Zac. (I think Zac has improved a lot over the last few games in the 3 pt area. I hope this positive change continues.) My biggest disappointment in this part of our game is Michael. He obviously has the athleticism and size to get to the basket. He just still seems too rusty, skill wise, to get it done on a regular basis. I think that with more honed skill, Jadun is the type of player that could take over portions of the games like Burford used to do. I watched the game on Flo last night after being at the game Wednesday. I think I remember Taylor saying that Max will possibly be back for the next game.

Agree for the most part and I just want to be clear that I personally am not “outraged” by any of the results this season. Anyone could have seen this coming after Schrage left. But it can be tough though when talking about any specific game to find a lot of positives when Elon hasn’t beaten a D1 team and we’ve really only had a chance late in the game against UNCG and Delaware. So maybe that comes across worse in a written message board than I think some of the posters on here mean it. We’ve looked better the past few games and a big part of that is Zac getting more into the flow of the game and finding an offensive rhythm. I think defensively he’s been a lot better too. Pace overall is still meh but we’ve done a slightly better job in CAA play getting some transition buckets as well. Sean gets too much slack from some certain posters on here. He does a lot of the small things well (like rebounding from the guard spot) and I think a lot of the offense falls on him at times when maybe that’s not the design. But realistically we need a guard with D1 athleticism. Sam, Max and LA have tremendous upside in my opinion and there should be a big focus on getting them involved and developing.

Maybe, but he needs to understand his limitations at this level. He needs to work on ball movement versus incessantly dribbling to find an open shot for himself. Any number of players can rebound from the guard position. When I see him making an effort toward making our TEAM better, I promise I'll give as much praise then as I give grief now. I really do feel that he gives maximum effort. No complaint there. He just hasn't proven to be a good decision maker. I've been saying all season that I'd like to see more focus toward the younger players. If we were in the middle of the pack, playing the more experienced PG would make sense. We are 0-14, 0-3 with no realistic hope of winning more than 2-3 games before season's end. It's time to start preparing for 2023/24 in my opinion.

Just thinking out loud.

Come on guys. Thousands of words utilized on this post, but this dumpster fire can be summed up in a few sentences. We have beaten a cooking school and a school from like Division 5. That’s it. We are beyond terrible. Blow it up. Go to the portal and get like 8-10 guys. And if Taylor won’t or can’t do it, get someone who will. This program needs to blown to smithereens.

This team will be blown up at seasons end. We are definitely losing 6 players and possibly 7, many which play now. We have a super recruit by the name of Kendall Campbell who received numerous Power 5 offers and another potential solid player on Issac Hayes. We will pretty much have Sherry, Pratt and Mackinnon left over from this squad. Keep in mind by the time Taylor got on staff the transfer portal was already picked over. Word is he will definitely be utilizing the portal this coming year. We all knew this year was going to be difficult but next year will be better. Hell, it can't be much worse.
