Sad state of affairs all around for the Phoenix today. Neither of our backup qbs knows how to lead a receiver. Allen has had plenty of time to find a receiver and is afraid to throw because when he does, he’s way off the mark. The result is sack a palooza for Nova. Lankford has had open receivers but misses the target or throws the ball so hard Jerry Rice couldn’t catch it. Our OL can’t run block, which isn’t all their fault because of our one dimensional offense. Actually, today we are zero dimensional.
When I started writing this Nova had 21 points. This could very easily have been 42 if they hadn’t turn the ball over so much.
I’m not sure if it’s just that we are so thin on talent, we are inconsistent in disciplined intensity or Nova is that good. Could be a combo of all three. But this is obviously not the team that beat W&M.

As far as the defense goes, can't get any pressure on the QB and giving up too many long runs up the middle.

What an abysmal, pathetic offensive display. 476 vs 99 total yards. Elon only 5 first downs…FIVE!! Certainly the worst offensive game against a conf opponent I can remember in nearly 20 years of following Elon football. Elon has been beaten worse before, especially during the Swepson and Skrosky eras, but those were more of a combined effort of ineptness on BOTH sides of the ball. This was 100% on the offense. Our backup QB’s are not college level, much less FCS caliber. Those are recruiting failures. Our all-world RB had 19 yards rushing…19!!! What the what?? Unless Elon wins out or close to it, this is the kind of loss that hopefully will force our new AD to conduct a complete review of the program, and perhaps leading to a full blown coaching change. I have supported Coach T, but this was an absolute embarrassment.

Without Downing (why is it so hard to find out his, or any player's, injury status?), I don't see us winning another game. I had thought we would at least beat both Monmouth and Hampton, but that was with Downing under center.
Nevertheless, as always, Go, Phoenix!

And, no. Villanova is not that good. Our defense generated turnovers, but we could not capitalize on them.
Go, Phoenix!

For all you old skool Phoenix fans, those two QB’s we trotted out today make Mike Quinn look like Joe Montana.

I’m in no way trying to say our qb’s shouldn’t take some of the blame over the last few weeks but so should the offensive coordinator, our play calling is pretty embarrassing coming from last season to now. We don’t really work much of the middle of the field, lot of over the top and to the sideline trying to beat 1 on 1 defenders. If you’re a defensive coordinator you are licking your chops to play us, we dont change anything week to week.

Under Swepson (2013) he threw for 2,618 yards, behind Riddle, Cheek, Wilson, and McKay all-time. He's fourth on the all-time Elon (FCS) list for career yards 5,201, behind Riddle, Cheek, and Wilson. Under Skrosky (2014) he had 2,436 yards. He had a stretch of over 200 passing attempts without an interception, as I recall.

Separate issue. I cannot remember when Elon athletics was so downtrodden. Nearly every fall sport stinks. Football was the lone bright spot, but after these last two weeks we can’t say that anymore. And both Mens and Women's Bball don’t look anything close to promising come winter. With the exception of baseball, this is a athletic department in need of a reboot. Hope the new AD has some ideas.

That was offensive performance like this here.

Having said that, I have been scratching my head for several years now at play calling. I’m not sure a change in coaching personnel is necessary but some changes in modus operandi obviously are. We were spoiled by McKay. I think Lankford has surprised everyone. So far he hasn’t developed to expectations, and it looks like we’ll be looking for another P5 transfer for next year. Hopefully we can find a McKay level transfer with a couple years of eligibility left.
