The team absolutely needs to win this game tomorrow night. A win doesn't necessarily mean much, but a loss could spell real problems the rest of the way. Still no road wins and this is going to be their easiest chance to get one this season. The road game at Furman being the next one.
The next four are critical. At a minimum they need to come out of it 2-2. The team has a lot of talent and I'd like to see that team that manhandled Georgia State make a run in conference play.
Go Phoenix!

I saw the Citadel play at Davidson and they really surprised me. They only played freshmen in the game and have only two returners from last year. We definately need to be up for this game because the Citadel looked dangerous. I think they made 12 threes against Davidson.

The Citadel also almost lost to Webber International, a struggling NAIA school. I've been on Webber's campus....not a lot there. Its a school in the middle of orange groves in Florida. Athletics are not big and they aren't close to being the best in their conference in either on court play or facilities.

EFF, you weren't rooming with me year I took the trip to Webber International. I can see how a school like that recruits. Their conference has Embry-Riddle (who has a better basketball facility and soccer facility than us, but no football) and they have teams like Webber who's facilities are so bad, there are middle schools that have better gyms than they do.
I should have taken pictures.
Now that I think of it, the Bulldogs also played Webber in football. I find it a little weird that they are playing these guys in more than one sport. They could do better, even on the sub-DI level.

Elon is favored by 5 1/2...
Elon preps for plunge into league play By Adam Smith / Times-News January 3, 2008 - 3:56PM ELON — Coach Ernie Nestor continually preaches to his Elon University men’s basketball team that its next game is its most important of the season.
Now that teaching tool takes on a heightened significance.
Elon, with three Southern Conference victories already secured, dives into the full portion of its league schedule starting tonight.
“The conference games are what we are about,” Nestor said, “and none of them are going to be anything but battles for us.”
Seventeen regular-season games remain in front of the Phoenix. Sixteen of those are Southern Conference contests, meaning many grinding matchups await Elon, which Nestor called “a scratch-and-claw team” last month.
“We will be in more close games than not-close games,” the coach said. “So we have to be very good at everything we do that we can control.”
Nestor specifically referenced defense, rebounding and free-throw shooting in conjunction with that last statement.
Elon hasn’t played since receiving a 91-61 thumping at Virginia on Dec. 22. The Phoenix, winless in its six dates away from Alumni Gym this season, has lost three straight games since beating Wofford on Dec. 15.
“We need to make sure we get off to more good starts,” Elon leading scorer Ola Atoyebi said. “There’s a difference between being a whole-game team compared to a second-half team.” The Citadel had to rally three days ago to beat Cornell College of Iowa, a Division III program.
Last month, Citadel lost league games at Chattanooga and Davidson by an average margin of 17 points.

Nice win for the guys. I'm glad to see them win the games they should win. Sounds like the first half was a bit of a struggle, but these strong second halfs seem to be their M.O. They get that road victory too. Hopefully they can keep it going at Charleston.
Go Phoenix!

Furman beat Western Carolina tonight. That helps Elon in the division. Sadly, Wofford failed to hold the lead against Chattanooga. A solid win tonight. My, oh my, these next two games are tough.
C of C nearly beat South Carolina in Columbia and Davidson should be 3-0 in the ACC right now. (Well, maybe not 3-0, but you get my point.)
