Update: Three Former Elon Baseball Players Now in Minors

Matt Stocco is playing for the Ft. Wayne Wizards.ELON, N.C. -- Three former Elon University baseball standouts are continuing their careers by playing at the minor league level for major league squads. Pitcher Joe Winkelsas and infielder Paul Bennett are currently in the Atlanta Braves' system while catcher Matt Stocco is a member of the San Diego Padres organization.
Winkelsas, a member of Elon's 1996 team, is currently playing for the Mississippi Braves, the AA affilitate of the Atlanta Braves. The righty began the year with AAA Richmond where he went 1-0 with a 3.97 ERA in 11.1 innings of work. After a stint on the disabled list, Winkelsas was sent to Mississippi where he has gone 0-2 with a 1.83 ERA in 10 appearances. He's thrown 19.2 innings and fanned 17 while walking just seven. Opponents are hitting just .216 off of him at Mississippi.
Bennett, a 2006 Elon graduate who was a member of the 2006 SoCon championship team, also spent time on the disabled list this season while playing for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. In 22 games, Bennett has batted .290 (18-62), posted a .419 slugging percentage and has a .439 on base percentage. He has three doubles, a triple and one homer while scoring nine runs and driving in nine. Bennett has been successful in five of six stolen base attempts this year.
Stocco, who left Elon following the 2005 year, has appeared in 31 games for the Ft. Wayne Wizards, the A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. Stooco has hit .210 (22-105) with 12 runs scored, five doubles, one home run and seven RBI. He has also swiped two bags in three attempts for the Wizards.
