Phoenix Baseball Players Participate in Summer Leagues

ELON, N.C. -- Eight players from the 2007 Elon baseball roster are participating in summer leagues around the country. The Phoenix has one player in the Cape Cod League, two in the Valley League and five in the Northwoods League.
Right-handed pitcher Steven Hensley is playing in the prestigious Cape Cod League for the Bourne Braves. In four outings this summer, Hensley has gone 1-1 with a 5.14 ERA. In 14.0 innings of work, the rising junior has walked just four and struck out 11. Bourne currently sits atop the Western Division with a 10-4 record.
Infielder Ryan Adams and outfielder Pat Irvine are teammates on the Waynesboro Generals of the Valley League. The Generals are 17-7 and lead the Valley League.
Adams has appeared in 19 games, earning 15 starting assignments. The rising sophomore is batting .245 (13-53) with seven runs scored, three doubles and three RBI while slugging .302 and posting a .412 OBP.
Irvine currently leads the Generals with three triples and a .466 slugging percentage. Irvine, who will be a junior next season, has played in 22 games and is hitting .274 (20-73) with two doubles and two homers to go with 16 RBI. Earlier this summer, Irvine collected league player of the week accolades.
In the Northwoods League, righty Tom Porter and catcher Mike Melillo both play for the Mankato Moondogs, outfielder Chris Dove and infielder Chase Austin are both playing for the Duluth Huskies and righty Daniel Britt is spending the summer with the Battle Creek Bombers.
Porter has appeared in six games and has gone 1-2 with a 7.88 ERA. In 8.0 innings, the rising junior has struck out eight and held opponents to a .194 batting average.
Melillo has hit .279 (19-68) in 19 games this summer, scoring 11 runs and driving in 11 more. He has six doubles and one homer. The rising sophomore has slugged .412 for the 14-16 Moondogs.
Dove has hit just .152 in 18 games for the Huskies who are 18-12 and sit second in the North Division. He has scored five runs and has one double. Dove, who will be a junior next season, has seven stolen bases.
Austin has seen action in 25 games, batting .268 (22-82) with 10 runs scored and seven RBI. The rising sophomore has two doubles, a triple and a home run while posting a .355 OBP.
Britt has made four starts for the 13-17 Bombers and has posted an 0-1 record with a 4.22 ERA. The rising sophomore has hurled 21.1 innings and has fanned eight.
