ELON - The next Hall of Fame class set for induction at Elon University includes a president.
That would be school president emeritus Earl Danieley, who's joined by former football players Quinton Ballard and Randy Oxendine, former baseball player Paul Braxton, former football and wrestling coach Macky Carden and former women's soccer and softball player Tracy Shuford.
The new class, Elon's 38th edition of Sports Hall of Famers, will be honored Sept. 13 at Whitley Auditorium on the school's campus.
From 1979-82, Ballard racked up 208 tackles and 20 quarterback sacks from his defensive tackle position. He was a member of Elon's conference, district and NAIA national championship football teams in 1980 and 1981.
Braxton, an outfielder, was a senior on Elon's 1927 team, which finished 14-4 and became the winningest baseball squad in the first 28 seasons of the school. He earned captain's status as a junior and all-state recognition as a senior.
Carden, a former Elon offensive lineman, coached the school's football program to a 34-17 record from 1984-1988. His teams compiled winning seasons in each of those five years, to go with two district championships and three league runner-up finishes. He also coached four seasons of wrestling at Elon.
Danieley, an Elon graduate, served as school president from 1957-1973. During his tenure, the school began its women's basketball and volleyball programs. Elon hired its winningest football coach (Red Wilson) and men's basketball coach (Bill Miller) during Danieley's presidency. Gibsonville's Kay Yow, now the legendary women's basketball coach at North Carolina State, also coached at Elon while Danieley was the president.
Oxendine, a defensive tackle from 1973-76, helped Elon to its first three district titles and first three playoff appearances in football. He was named all-state and conference Lineman of the Year during his playing career. He recovered three fumbles in a 1974 victory against Guilford College.
Shuford became an all-conference performer as a goalkeeper in women's soccer and a third baseman / left fielder in softball. She collected eight varsity letters - four in softball, two in soccer and two in basketball - during the early 1990s at Elon.
