ELON — Elon University’s baseball team suffered a big loss a few months before its first 2008 game.
Right-handed pitcher Will Romanowicz, a regular in the starting rotation last season, won’t play during the upcoming season because of a shoulder injury, coach Mike Kennedy said.
“We have to find 100 innings somewhere,” Kennedy said, referring to Romanowicz’s absence. “He threw every Saturday. He was a weekend guy for us. Those guys are hard to replace.”
Romanowicz underwent surgery during Thanksgiving break to repair what Kennedy called a “slap tear.” He’ll be sidelined six months, the coach said.
Romanowicz had the best winning percentage on Elon’s 2007 staff with a 6-3 record to go with a 5.36 earned run average. He was second among the Phoenix in wins, strikeouts (56) and innings pitched (92 1/3). He was a starter in 13 of his 17 appearances, registering one complete game. He also picked up one save.
Romanowicz was a first-year member of Elon’s 2007 team, which went 32-29, after transferring from Stetson. He spent part of last summer on campus, Kennedy said, and then returned for the fall semester with some discomfort in his shoulder.
He could be ready to pitch in summer leagues.
“We probably won’t rush that,” Kennedy said.
Romanowicz, a 6-foot-1, 170-pounder, would have been in a redshirt junior season in 2008. Kennedy said it’s possible that Elon could apply to the NCAA for a special sixth year of eligibility for Romanowicz to play beyond 2009. Kennedy said he sat out as a true freshman at Stetson because of illness.
- DOVE, HENSLEY MAKE LIST: Elon junior outfielder Chris Dove, a former Southern Alamance High School player, and junior pitcher Steve Hensley are on the 2008 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Award watch list as listed by the College Baseball Foundation. They’re two of 11 Southern Conference players on the preseason list.
The Wallace Award is presented to the nation’s top collegiate baseball player in conjunction with the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s annual induction festivities in Lubbock, Texas.
